TURKEY DERBY AUTO RACES THIS SATUDAY, NOVEMBER 30
(Cedar Rapids, IA 11/25/02)—A favorable weather forecast this weekend has Hawkeye Downs Speedway officials excited about the “Turkey Derby.” The inaugural Open Competition Auto Races are scheduled for this Saturday afternoon, November 30.
All
racing will be on the Hawkeye Downs Speedway paved ¼ mile track. Dirt and
Asphalt Stock Cars and Modifieds of all divisions are welcome. The field will
be divided into two divisions, “Wishbones,” and “Drumsticks” in the spirit of
Thanksgiving weekend.
The
“Wishbones” class has few rules. Any tires are allowed, and cars can have a
maximum of 8 inch spoiler, with no wings. Otherwise, “anything goes.” This will
allow such cars as dirt and asphalt Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsmen, and Pro
Stocks to compete.
The
“Drumsticks” class has a few more rules. Cars must have a full stock frame and
full stock steel body. Tires have a maximum
width of 8 inches and must be treaded. Drumsticks are also allowed an 8
inch spoiler, and wings are forbidden. Eligible cars include dirt and asphalt
Super Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars, Cruisers, and Compacts.
The
“Wishbones” will be lined up by draw, with heat races to determine feature
line-ups. The “Drumsticks” will time trial, and then be divided into classes by
qualifying time. A ¼ second “breakout rule” will insure “no sandbagging.”
The
promoters of the event, Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Special K Motorsports, have
received numerous inquiries from competitors from Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa. Due to the uncertain weather this time of year,
advance entries were not accepted.
An open
“Test and Tune” session will be held Friday, November 29, from Noon until 5pm.
Admission is free with a $25 per car testing fee.
On
Saturday, the pit gate opens at 10am. Grandstand gates open and practice starts
at 11am. Time Trials are at 1pm, with Racing at 2pm. Rain date is the next day,
Sunday, December 1 with the same start times.
Adult,
Senior and Student grandstand admission Saturday is $8, with Children 11 and
under Free. Pit Pass Saturday is $20.
