182 ENTRIES FOR THIS WEEKEND’S CHALLENGE CUP
(Cedar Rapids, IA 10/09/03)—An incredible 182 pre-entries have been
received for the “Marines.com Quarter Mile Challenge Cup” this weekend (October
10-11-12) at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
With additional
entries expected race day, a field of well over 200 cars is expected. Divisions
racing are Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, Cruisers, and 4 Cylinders.
Drivers representing 8
states and 32 track championships are among the pre-entries. Most of the cars
and drivers are from dirt tracks, but several Hawkeye Downs pavement drivers
will be in action is dirt track cars.
Some of the more
familiar names to Cedar Rapids area fans entered in the Modifieds include
Johnny Spaw, Jim Ross, Max Corporon, Landon Cassill, Tim Plummer, Marty
Diercks, Brett Diercks, Kyle Diercks, Rob Olson, Brian Efkamp, Scott Megonigle,
and Scott Hogan.
Some familiar Stock
Car drivers entered include Doug Simon, Dave McCalla, Bob Ahrendsen, Paul
Walder, Brad Dvorak, Aric Becker, Chad Siems, Kurt Bohnsack, Jayson Scott, John
Ness, Wendy Carnahan, Norman Chesmore, and Larry Silbaugh.
In addition to the
racing, the sponsor of the event, the US Marines, will have several fan
friendly promotions. An obstacle course will be set up outside the main gates,
and fans can try to set the best time, which will win $100. A mock Marines
battle camp will be set up, along with a firing range.
The first 500 fans
through the gates Sunday will receive a US Marines T-Shirt. A total of 1000 US
Marines items will be given away.
Friday’s schedule
calls for open practice from 5pm-8pm. Admission is free to both the pits and
grandstand Friday. There is a charge of $25 per car to practice.
Saturday’s schedule
has a full program of qualifying races. Pit Gate opens at 9am, Grandstand Gates
open at 11am, Practice starts at 11am, and Racing commences at 2pm. Grandstand
admission is Free Saturday. Pit Pass is $25.
The event wraps up
Sunday with last chance races and feature races. Start times are the same as
Saturday. Adult Grandstand Admission is $14, with Children 11 and Under
admitted Free Sunday. Pi Pass is $25.
