DEMOLITION DERBY RULES AND REGULATIONS

 

RULES DISCLAIMER: The rules and/or regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events.  These rules shall govern the condition of all events, and by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to have complied with these rules.  NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATIONS OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS.  They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator, or official.

The Event Director shall be empowered to permit reasonable and appropriate deviation from any of the specifications herein or impose any futher restrictions that in his opinion do not alter the minimum acceptable requirements.  NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH ALTERATION OF SPECIFICATIONS.  Any interpretation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials.  Their decision is final.

GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS: All drivers must be 18 years or older or have a written parental notarized consent to be able to participate.  Proof of legal driving age is required.  Minor Release Forms are available by contacting Hawkeye Downs.  The pit area will be restricted to participants and pit crew only.  No children under age of 14 will be allowed in the pit area.  Any fighting or drinking in the pit area will subject the offender and the car he is associated with to disqualification, depending upon the seriousness of the incident and the decision of track officials.  The driver & owner of each car is responsible for his pit crew and their conduct, including family and friends in the grandstand.

Only track officials are allowed in the scorer's area, no competitors or crew.  Drivers are not allowed to get out of their cars on the track to argue or discuss rulings with the flagman and officials.   Drivers are not allowed to unfasten seat belts and helmets to work on cars during event (unless car is on fire).  This will result in immediate disqualification.

 

Any disagreement over technical questions or operations will be resolved by event officials.  Their decision is FINAL AND BINDING.

 

Removal of Vehicle Responsibility of Contestant.  Vehicle must be removed immediately after event.  Any Vehicle or Parts left on Hawkeye Downs grounds will become property of Hawkeye Downs at Midnight the night of the event and will be disposed of.

 

No Drinking of Alcoholic Beverages before or during event.  No glass bottles allowed on grounds

WHAT MUST BE DONE BEFORE ENTERING GROUNDS--MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS LEGAL--NO REFUNDS

 

GLASS & TRIM: Remove all glass(Windshield Optional). All chrome and plastic trim and mouldings must be removed, including plastic grills, tail lights, parking lights.

 

ENGINE: No set back.  Any engine in any body style.

 

WELDING: THIS IS A "NO WELD" DERBY.  NO WELDING ALLOWED EXCEPT WHAT IS MENTIONED BELOW.

Welds on hoods, trunks, or doors must be no longer than 4 inches and must be spaced one foot apart.  No welding rods may be longer than 4 inches.  Driver's door may be welded solid.

 

BODY: Fenders may be cut to outer diameter of tires.  Foam in doors only.  No foam in trunk, wheel wells, or under hood. No more than 10 screws or bolts on any hood, trunk, or door.  One brace may be welded between doors behind seat.  One cross brace may be welded between the two front doors on dash   Drivers door may be welded solid.  If using wire in window openings, use no larger than #9 wire and no more than three strands in each opening.  No wire allowed in front window openings, left or right.

 

BUMPERS: May wire or chain bumpers.  Maximum chain size is 3/8 inch and must be bolted on.  Bring extra chain and wire for emergency purposes.  Bumper ends may be cut.  Bumper shocks may be welded.   

 

TRUNK: Must be chained down with one loose loop of chain to prevent lid from opening.  Trunk lids must have two holes cut large enough for inspection of trunk area.  Trunk must be empty--no added ballast.  No trunk pins can be connected to frame.  No wires, straps, or chains from trunk lid to trunk floor.  Steel straps used to weld trunk shut may not exceed 2 inches wide X 1/4 inch thick X 6 inches long.  You are allowed only two.  This also applies to station wagon tailgates.

 

HOOD: All cars must have a hood, securely fastened down, in original stock position..  Must have holes for inspection and fire extinguisher access.  No hood pins connected to frame.  Hoods may not extend to front bumper.

 

WIRING & CHAINING HOODS AND TRUNKS: If using wire or chain for hoods and trunks, use no larger than #9 wire or equivalent size chain.  THIS MEANS DOG CHAIN, NOT LOG CHAIN!  You may have a total of two chains on the trunk and two chains on the hoods, or three strands of wire on the trunk and three strands of wire on the hood.

 

NUMBERING AND APPEARANCE: All cars must have minimum 10 inch or higher cut in roof bent up with car number on both sides.  Must have car number painted on both sides' doors.  No profane words, suggestive pictures, or objectionable logos or signs allowed. 

 

SAFETY: All drivers must wear approved helmet.  Seat Belt required.  Driver's Door may have support for driver's protection.  Foam padding on back seat and inside of driver's door recommended. 

 

SUSPENSION: Must be remain standard height with no spacers, stops, or blocks, or reversed spring shackles used to raise or lower the car.  torsion bars may not be adjusted to raise or lower the car.  Shocks may not be welded, strapped, or blocked from functioning.  Spring leaves may not be welded and no more than 4 bands (of original size) allowed on each spring.  Rear springs and rear end may not be tied to the frame.  Locked rear ends optional.  No wires or chains from rear end springs to body or frame.  Stock type springs only.  No truck springs.

 

BATTERY: May be moved to inner car area, but must be fastened securely and covered with foam, inner tube, or plastic.  No more than two regular automotive batteries or one "cat type" battery allowed.

 

GAS TANK: Must be moved to inner car area and must be fastened securely.  All original gas tanks must be removed or drained.

 

TIRES: Any street legal tire may be used.  Tires must be filled with air only.  One tire per wheel.  No tires inside tires.

 

SMALL CAR RULES: Any factory 4 cylinder cars.  V-6 cars allowed only if front wheel drive.  No V-8 Cars.  No Inline 6 Cylinder Cars.  No steel sub frame cars (Dusters, Novas, Volares, etc.).  4 and 6 cylinder cars do not have to move gas tanks if tank is in front of the axle. All other above Demolition Derby rules apply, except small cars must have one piece of channel iron pipe or steel bar mounted on left side of door for driver's protection.
