HAWKEYE DOWNS CROWNS SEASON CHAMPIONS

(Cedar Rapids, IA 09/03/2010) The 2010 racing season came to a close at Hawkeye Downs Friday night September 3, with the annual Barron Motor Supply Season Championships.

Performance Concepts Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, and Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods all ran heats and features before Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series winners were named.

The Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen ran their last race of the season last week with Andy Duggan named the season champion. Duggan racked up seven wins in that division.

The McGrath PowerSports INEX Legends presented by Bulltown Legends were also on hand running both heats and features Friday night.

Tim Plummer had already locked up the Performance Concepts Late Models point title heading into Friday night but just to make sure there was no doubt who the champion was, he won both his heat and the 30-lap feature.

Brad Osborn led the first five circuits of the feature before caution erased a sizable lead. Three laps later Tim Plummer was glued to Osborn’s rear bumper and by lap ten Plummer had seized the lead. Caution waved again on lap fourteen but once the field took the green Plummer set sail again amassing a 1.3 second lead over Joey Gase as the checkers waved.  Kyle Hinrichs. Brad Dvorak, and Thor Anderson completed the top of the order.

The early leader, Osborn, left the race with apparent mechanical problems near the halfway mark.

As with the Late Models, Tim Plummer had the Budweiser Modified division well in hand even before the season championship feature having won ten features. Plummer earned his eleventh win Friday night posting a 4.6 second margin over Larry Clausen. Plummer took the lead on lap three after starting in row two and never looked back in picking up the win. Finishing behind Clausen was Ryan Luedtke, Brian Gibson, and Craig Bender.

By winning both the Performance Concepts Late Models and Budweiser Modifieds divisions, Plummer becomes the first driver to win two different half-mile divisions in the same season since Hawkeye Downs was paved. Past records don’t indicate whether that fete was accomplished at any time during Hawkeye Downs Speedway’s long history.

While Bob Ahrendsen never visited Victory Lane this season his record of consistent high finishes in 2010 was enough to earn him the 2010 Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car season championship. On the track Friday night, Mark Bolton picked up his first win of the season, edging out Ahrendsen for the win. Jim Hanson crossed the stripe in third while Cory Houdek and Kurt Bohnsack filled out the top of the order.

Nathan Ballard has dominated the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock division in 2010 with eight wins heading into the last race. While he didn’t cap off the season with a feature win he easily earned the title. Matt Petrzelka brought home his second win of the season Friday night, outlasting Roland Bohnsack.

Kandi Floyd capped off a strong 2010 with a third place feature finish, which secured second place on the points chart. Jeremy Robbins and the 2010 champion, Nathan Ballard completed the top five.

Aric Becker won his first track championship Friday night as he was crowned the Coca-Cola IMCA SportMod season champion. Becker had six feature wins to his credit heading into Friday night.

On the track, Tim Dains took the checkered flag with Blake Carson and the season champ, Becker officially finishing second and third. Brogan Fiala finished ahead of Carson on the track but his car is not points eligible.

While they weren’t running for Hawkeye Downs points, the McGrath PowerSports Legends ran another entertaining feature with “Mr Bulltown” himself, Warren Ropp, taking the win. Griffin McGrath took the lead early on with Ropp and appeared to have things well in hand until the white flag lap when Ropp made the winning pass. Jeremy Meyer ran second much of the race before Ropp wrestled the position away.

McGrath finished second followed by Al Direcks, Jeremy Meyer, and Rusty Shadden.

Hawkeye Downs hoped to run the INEX Legends on a regular basis next season.

As previously mentioned, final Sunline Hornets results will be published once Hawkeye Downs Officials’ review the events during and after the race.
