SPAW, MCCALLA, OLSON AMONG WINNERS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar Rapids, IA
08/28/2009)—Thanks to the efforts of many racers, crew members, fans, Hawkeye
Downs staff, and others the show went on at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday
night. Heavy rains saturated the area for much of the week and overloaded
drainage systems at Hawkeye Downs that feed into Prairie Creek. This left
Hawkeye Downs Speedway and the pit area looking more like a lake than a race
track.

A small army
of volunteers worked to finish pumping water off the track and deal with the
numerous “weepers” right up until race time. The program was modified slightly
to allow more time to work on the half-mile and the efforts paid off with some
great racing.
Rookie IMCA Northern Sportmod driver Blake Carson
picked up his first win in that division, beating point leader Scott Kositzky to the stripe for the win in a 20-lap feature.
Carson started outside row two and quickly bolted into the lead then survived
two restarts to pick up his first win. Scott Kositzky
finished second while Aric Becker, Ken Kositzky, and Dave Coghlan filled
out the top of the order.
Nathan Ballard racked up his fourth win of the season
in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks after taking the lead from Roland
Bohnsack with two laps of the scheduled twenty remaining. Kandi Floyd led the first half the race
before Bohnsack took the point.
Bohnsack held on for second while Scott Siems was third.
Last weeks’ winner Duayne Herb was fourth and Deb Mefford finished fifth.
After Friday’s action, Ballard unofficially has a
one-point lead over Siems with three point races remaining.
Derek Parrott took top honors in the 25-lap Sunline
Hornets feature, his second trip to Coca-Cola Victory Lane this season. Parrott
started in the first row and moved out to a big lead early. The caution flag slowed
the action a couple times but Parrott maintained a comfortable margin until
about seven laps remaining as Brad Chandler started challenging for the top
spot. Chandler made a bid for the lead on the last lap but Parrott prevailed.
Chandler finished second with Bryce Bailey, Cory VanDerWal,
and Dan Burhite also finished in the top five.
Cory Houdek picked up the winners hardware in Barron
Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars which was his first victory of the season. Houdek
started inside row three and took the lead from polesitter
Chad Siems with just two laps to go. Earlier in the race, point leader Kurt
Bohnsack got caught up in an incident involving a couple other cars but was
able to continue.
Finishing behind Houdek was Bob Ahrendsen, Dave Ballastaedt, Dennis Hundley, and Kurt Bohnsack. The
apparent third-place car of Chad Siems failed post-race inspection.
Bohnsack’s point lead
over Houdek is unofficially down to just three points.
Moving to the half-mile for the rest of the Papa Johns Pizza/I-Wireless Championship Series action, Tony
Olson picked up his second win of the season in Coors Light Modifieds as he
held off repeated challenges for the lead from defending champion Tim Plummer.
Olson started the 25-lap feature on the point and had clear sailing until lap
ten when Plummer started to make a run for the lead.
Olson was able to hold off Plummer each time and
prevailed at the stripe by about a half-second.
Ryan Luedtke finished third, Larry Clausen was fourth, and Steve Lindell
was fifth.
Unofficially, Larry Clausen and Tim Plummer are dead
even in the points battle.
Dave McCalla and Andy Duggan have been battling for
the top slot in Budweiser Sportsmen all season long and Friday night was no
exception. Dave McCalla took the lead on lap three from Michael Weber forming a
three-car breakaway consisting of himself, Weber, and Andy Duggan. The three were running nose-to-tail with
under ten laps to go with Duggan slipping around Weber with seven circuits
remaining.
Duggan made a couple tries for the lead in the last
five laps and appeared to have been ready to settle for second until the last
lap when he made a furious charge for the win. McCalla was able to hold him off
by a scant .111 seconds at the stripe. Weber maintained third, Travis Thompson
was fourth, and Greg Hentrich was fifth. McCalla and
Duggan are now tied for the points championship in
Budweiser Sportsmen.
Finally, Johnny Spaw scored
his fifth trip to victory lane of the season as he finished 1.8 seconds ahead
of point leader Joey Gase in a forty-lap feature. Spaw
took the lead from Jim Ross on a lap nine restart and was never seriously
challenged the rest of the way. The race was slowed by several minor cautions
but Spaw was able to pull away each time.
Joey Gase finished second, Jim Ross was third, Thor Anderson
crossed the stripe in fourth, and Justin Jennings posted his highest finish of
the season, finishing fifth.
Racing continues next Friday night, September 4.
