TWO RACES FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

(Cedar Rapids, IA 8/27/02)—Hawkeye Downs Speedway wraps up its “regular season” this Friday and Saturday nights. After this weekend, the only racing left is the  ASA Racing Series weekend September 7-8.

Friday, Hawkeye Downs presents the “Rainbow Paint and Sandblasting Season Championships.” Saturday, open wheel racing returns with UMARA Midgets and Classic Modifieds.

Gates open and practice starts Friday at 5:30pm with racing at 7:30pm. Gates open and practice starts Saturday at 4pm with racing at 7:30pm.

Admission prices each night are: Adults $10, Seniors and Students$7, Children 11 and Under free.

A special added attraction Friday is an on track autograph session with all cars and drivers at 6:30 pm.  Also Friday, members of the Cedar Rapids Roughriders hockey team will sign autographs, and the Roughriders Fun Gun will shoot t-shirts into the crowd.

Friday’s “Season Championships” will include the presentation of the “Papa John’s Cup” to the five divisional champions.  The “Rookies of the Year” will also be decided.

The closest championship point race is in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks.  Defending champ Brad Dvorak leads team mate Kurt Bohnsack by just 4 points.  Bohnsack needs to beat Dvorak by 2 positions to share the title, or by three positions to win it outright.

Also up for grabs is the Performance Concepts Late Model championship.  Johnny Spaw will win the title by finishing 16th or better.  If Brian Gibson wins the feature, he would be co-champion if Spaw finishes 17th and the champion if Spaw finishes 18th or lower.  Gibson would also be the co-champ if he finished 2nd and Spaw placed 18th or lower.

Mike Schulte will win his 12th Miller Time Modified title by starting the feature race.  There’s a close race for second though, with Bob Gase, Larry Clausen, and Brian Allen separated by just 4 points.

Fourteen year old Kyle Hinrichs will win the Foreman Hydraulics Legends championship by merely entering the car and practicing.

Curt Van Der Wal clinched his second straight Budweiser Sportsmen Championship last week.  Brian Franks leads Johnny Mudd by just 14 points for second.

The Late Model “Rookie of the Year” race is close, with Brad Osborn ahead of Ross Kurth by just four points.  Also undecided is the Super Stock “Rookie of the Year”, with Cory Houdek ahead of Greg Hentrich by 16 points.

Matt Van Gelder has wrapped up the Sportsman Rookie title, as has Chad Willett in Modifieds.

Saturday, drivers from the United Midget Auto Racing Alliance will take over Hawkeye Downs.  Two divisions of Midget Cars, one on the half mile, and one on the quarter mile, will race.  Also on the program are open wheel Classic Modifieds, with are similar to Legends cars without fenders.
