SEASON CHAMPS CROWNED AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

(Cedar Rapids, IA  08/26/05)—The 2005 regular season came to a close at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night with the running of the Rainbow Paint and Sandblasting Season Championships. Winners were crowned in both the Papa Johns Cup/ I-Wireless Championships as well as the Full Throttle Energy Drink Stars of Tomorrow.

There were also two rained out features run from the August 19 program.

The Miller Time Modifieds picked up their feature with 5 laps in the books and Shawn Stinger of Palo leading the race. With four laps to go caution bunched the field and that’s all the ammunition point leader Tim Plummer needed to take the lead on the restart. Plummer motored to the win and by winning the  make-up feature he claimed his second straight Miller Time IMCA Asphalt Modified crown.

Stinger finished the race in second followed by Chad Willett, Rodney Rocarek and Bob Gase.

The Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen make-up feature saw Dave McCalla pick up his fifth feature win of the season and in doing so he also earned top honors in the RacingInIowa.com Rookie of the Year chase. McCalla crossed the stripe ahead of Brian Franks, Andy Duggan, Martin Ballard, and Kevin Korsmo.  The fifth place finish yielded Korsmo the points title for the division.

At the beginning of the season Korsmo only planned to run a part-time schedule but after a strong start which led to eight wins throughout the season Korsmo elected to run the full slate. Korsmo has been atop the points chart since week two.

In season championship feature action, Nathan Ballard of Marengo racked up his 7th win of the season in the Marines.com Hornets.  Ballard finished ahead of Travis McCombs, Shawn Meyers, Connie Binder, and Clint Sheppard. By finishing fourth,  Connie Binder of Clutier scored the points title in the Marine.com Hornets division and in doing so created some Hawkeye Downs history. Binder became the first woman to win a division at Hawkeye Downs in which both women and men compete.

Season Championship line-up were set by inverting up to ten drivers in each division by points with the rest of the field falling in behind based on points. Drivers had to participate in 75% of the season to be eligible for the invert.

The  15 lap Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock Feature was one of the most exciting of the night as Terry Shaffar of State Center nipped Brandon Herb at the line in a three-wide finish. The win was the 12th of the season for Shaffar but wasn’t enough to get him higher than fourth in the points chase due to some bad luck early in the season. Tim Dains was scored third in the race, followed by Ron Dighton, and Scott Siems.

Brandon Herb did lay claim to the points title despite not having won a feature all season. Herb proved consistency can win title though as he racked up fifteen top five finishes over the course of the season.

The Performance Concepts Late Models featured an equally close finish as Brad Osborn of Janesville nipped Scott Wennermark by just four one-thousandths of a second in their 25 laps feature according to Alliant Energy Timing and Scoring. Denny Osborn finished third with Jeff King running fourth in a car borrowed from Landon Cassill. Brian Allen finished in fifth.

Brad Osborn scored his second straight points title in the division and only needed to start the race to secure his Papa Johns Cup for the division.

The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car feature win went to Brad Dvorak as he beat Chad Siems, Doug Simon, Logan Hale, and Bob Ahrendsen to the stripe. The win was Dvorak’s seventh of the season and was good enough to land the division title for the Cedar Rapids Driver. Dvorak has two previous championships in the Super Stock Division which was replaced by the IMCA Stock Car division this season.

In other feature action held Friday night, Andy Duggan of Marion turned in a dominating performance in the 25-lap Budweiser Sportsmen Feature crossing the Lint Millwright Finish Line 1.6 seconds ahead of Brian Franks. Dave McCalla was third followed by point champion Kevin Korsmo and Kevin Franks. The win was Duggan’s fourth of the season.

In the other Miller Time Modified Feature run on Friday night, Time Plummer once again proved he was the dominant driver in the division as he blasted through the pack and took the lead with five laps remaining. Plummer racked up his fifth win of the season and finished ahead of Scott Grady, Shawn Stinger, Jim Hanson, and Chad Willett.

This was the final regular season race but the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, as well as the Marines.com Hornet will run extra distance, higher-purse features in conjunction with the ASA Late Model Series event at Hawkeye Downs on September 2.
