SPAW REGAINS HAWKEYE DOWNS LATE MODEL POINT LEAD
DVORAK, MUDD, HINRICHS, GASE POST WINS WITH TWO WEEKS TO GO
By Brad Grupe
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 08/16/02)—Johnny Spaw sits
atop the points chart once again after winning the latest Performance Concepts
Late Model feature in Friday night’s ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless action.
Spaw has climbed the chart steadily since deciding to return to weekly racing
and went into this week’s race 10 points behind Brian Gibson. Spaw had a narrow
lead on Gibson two weeks ago.
The latest trip to Coca-Cola Victory
Lane came after Spaw started in the front row and worked up to a challenging
position on Marty Diercks who led the majority of the race. Several cautions
kept the field bunched and in fact then race leader Marty Diercks retired from
the race with mechanical problems just after the caution waved for an incident
elsewhere on the track. It was unclear if the problem was purely mechanical or
the result of racing contact.
Spaw went on to handily win the
feature and was chased to the stripe by rookie Brad Osborn, Justin Diercks,
Scott Delsing, and Mike Ehde. The win was the fifth of the season for Spaw.
Brad Dvorak earned a little more
breathing room in the points chase in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks
feature easily outdistancing John Ness, Kurt Bohnsack, Aric Becker, and Jayson
Scott. Dvorak came into the night with a scant 2 point lead over team mate Kurt
Bohnsack. Dvorak’s lead will remain in single digits however.
Dvorak started the race in row two
and quickly left the field and some great position battles behind.
Johnny Mudd started on the pole in
the caution free Budweiser Sportsmen feature and picked up his first win of the
season. Mudd quickly built what would prove to be an insurmountable lead over
current point leader and defending champ Curt Van Der Wal. Van Der Wal was
mired in traffic early but once he cleared the slower cars he was unable to cut
into Mudd’s lead.
Brian Franks finished third with
John Henecke and Andy Duggan rounding out the top five.
Point leader Kyle Hinrichs made an
outside pass at the finish line to score the win in the Foreman Hydraulics
Legends feature. Race leader Ross Zumbach and Chris Sevey made apparent contact
exiting the fourth turn on the last lap and spun. Hinrichs carried just enough
momentum to take the win with Zumbach awarded second. Tom Frady, Gene Peterson,
and Mike Foreman completing the top of
the order.
Bob Gase emerged the winner in a
wild Miller Time Modified feature, which saw multiple cautions in which just
about every car was involved in at one time or another. Gase inherited the lead
after a caution with seven laps
remaining. He was able to hold off the charges of Arlo Becker coming to the
finish line but Becker apparently made contact with Gase as the duo crossed the
line. The win was the second of the season for Gase.
Arlo Becker finished in second, Jim
Williams third, point leader Mike Schulte was fourth, and Rodney Rocarek was
fifth.
Racing continues Friday, August 23
in the second to last point race of the season.
