CASEY’S GENERAL STORES/NATIONAL GUARD
NIGHT CROWD TREATED TO GREAT RACING AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar Rapids, IA 081409)—Jonny Williams and Tony Olson
picked up first career asphalt wins Friday night as part of Caseys
General Stores/ National Guard Night at Hawkeye Downs. A large, enthusiastic
crowd was on hand and was entertained with seven divisions of racing action
along with a make-up feature for Coors Light Modifieds.
The evening also included a very
entertaining (and smoky) Burnout/Smoke Show with various vehicles participating
during intermission.
Dudley Fleck, who has been a staple
in the Miller Lite Late Model division since Hawkeye
Downs was paved, picked up his second feature win of 2009 after setting fast
time earlier in the evening. Fleck started in row three, moved to second after
a lap seven restart and took the lead for good on lap eight of the scheduled
forty –lap event.
Point leader Joey Gase crossed the
stripe 2.4 seconds behind Fleck to take second. Brad Dvorak, Logan Hale and
Griffin McGrath all crossed the stripe in the top five as well.
In Budweiser Sportsmen, Andy Duggan
picked up his fourth trip to Coca-Cola Victory Lane which ties him with Dave
McCalla for number of wins in the division and unofficially gives Duggan a
one-point lead over McCalla in the point standings.
Kevin Lee led from the drop of the
green flag but Duggan steadily cut into the lead from his row three start and
with three laps remaining set up a challenge for the lead. Duggan
took the point on the next lap and went on to take the checkered flag ahead of
Lee, Dave McCalla, Michel Weber, and Doug Simon.
The Coors Light Modifieds ran two
features on Friday night. The first one was a make-up race from July 24. Tim
Plummer emerged from a side-by-side battle with Larry Clausen early in the race
to take the point on lap seven and eventually the checkered flag. Clausen maintained second and was followed to the stripe by Tony
Olson, Craig Bender, and Ryan Luedtke.
The second Coors Light Modified
feature was all Tony Olson as he started in the front row and quickly pulled
away while others battled for position behind. Larry Clausen did close some
ground as the laps ticked off but Olson amassed a 2.5 second winning margin in
what would be his first asphalt win. Clausen, Luedtke, Arlo Becker, and Craig
Bender also finished at the top of the order.
Greg Hentrich scored his second win
of 2009 in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars. Hentrich started up front and
maintained command of the race until about 5 laps to go when Bob Ahrendsen made
a bid for the lead. Ahrendsen couldn’t make the outside grove stick and that
allowed Brian Beaty to slip into second. Beaty did cross the line in second
followed by Ahrendsen, Cory Houdek, and Dave Ballstaedt.
Point leader Kurt Bohnsack finished seventh.
The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby
Stock feature went to Nathan Ballard after he wrestled the point away from
Shaun Myers with six laps remaining. Myers took the lead on lap six after Kandi
Floyd led the first few laps. Myers couldn’t hold off Ballard and had to settle
for second as the ckeckers waved. Roland Bohnsack
finished third, point leader Scott Siems was fourth, and Matt Petrzelka was fifth.
Jonny Williams took advantage of
starting on the pole as he collected his first Hawkeye Downs IMCA SportMod win. Tim Dains gave chase early in the race and
held second for much of the race before point leader Scott Kositzky
took second away. Dains held on to third with Aric Becker
and Blake Carson also in the top five.
Brogan Fiala
earned his third Sunline Hornets win of the season after the apparent race
winner, Brad Chandler failed post-race technical inspection. Complete results
for the division are pending.
