JIM HANSON WINS FIRST MODIFIED FEATURE
By Brad Grupe
(Cedar Rapids,
IA 08/11/06)—Jim Hanson of Cedar Rapids picked up his first career modified win at
Hawkeye Downs Speedway
on Friday night, holding off a very determined Larry Clausen to take the top spot.
Hanson
took the lead on the opening laps, hugged the low line around the track, and
had just enough more to keep Clausen from executing a pass in the high groove.
Rodney Rocarek, who continues to do double duty in both a modified and a late
model, finished in third.
Dudley
Fleck was back in action in the Performance Concepts Late Models and that
feature was close as well as he beat Scott Wennermark to the stripe by a scant
.267 seconds. Fleck started in the first row and never trailed. Like the modified
feature, the preferred line was down low and Wennermark couldn’t make the
outside work well enough to make a serious challenge for the spot. Brad Osborn
finished in third.
Ross
Zumbach returned to his winning ways in the Budweiser Sportsmen division.
Zumbach started outside row two and got control of the race following a lap 7
caution and built a comfortable lead as the laps ticked off. Curtis VanDerWal
made his return worthwhile finishing in second while JJ Meyer was third.
On
the quarter-mile, Chad
Siems racked up his third win in the last four starts and in the process picked
up a couple points on Brad Dvorak and Bob Ahrendsen, who are logjammed at the
top of the point chart for the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars. Siems
easily out-distanced Logan
Hale for the win. Bob Ahrendsen was third and now unofficially trails Brad
Dvorak by just two positions.
It
was business as usual in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks with Rodney
Grother picking up his seventh feature win of the 2006 campaign and padding his
point lead a little more as well. Gary Pfantz, who won the feature on Wednesday
night, finished in second while Tim Dains was third.
Nathan
Ballard hasn’t won every feature in the Sunline Hornets but he may as well have
as he continues to build a now insurmountable lead in that division. Three of
the entries experienced problems and didn’t start the race so Ballard had a
relatively easy time holding off Robert Ford for the win. Brian Beaty was third.
