TEN FEATURES MAKE FOR A BUSY NIGHT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS SPEEDWAY
(Cedar Rapids,
IA 08/10/07)—Race fans were treated to ten
features at ASA-sanctioned Hawkeye Downs Speedway
on “Van Meter Industrial Employee Appreciation Night.”
The evening was also designated as “Big
Kids Helping Little Kids Night” as the East Cedar Rapids/Marion Rotary Club
raised money for Shoes for Kids and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
through donations from admissions and concession sales. The group also held
various activities for kids including a candy and nickel dash.
The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars,
Sunline Hornets, Miller Time Modifieds, and IMCA Sportmods ran their make-up
features from Wednesday night with points and point averages from those
features used to determine starting positions for their regular features held
later in the program.
Point leader Bob Ahrendsen of Cedar Rapids picked up
his first feature win of the season in the make-up event for the Barron Motor
Supply IMCA Stock cars. Ahrendsen got a great restart off of a caution and went
on to win that feature. Doug Otto
finished second and Dennis Hundley was third.
Tony Olson conducted was what almost
become business as usual in winning the IMCA Sportmod feature, crossing the
Coors Light Finish Line ahead of Ryan Luedtke, and Brian Kauffman. Olson
continues to hold the point lead in that division.
In the Sunline Hornets make-up feature,
Brad Chandler of Vinton held off Brian Beaty and the rest of a 17 car field for
another wild feature in that division. The win was the fifth of the season for Chandler.
Tim Plummer scored another trip to Coca-Cola Victory Lane
in the Miller Time Modifieds as the defending champion continues his quest for
yet another points title. Plummer finished just over a second ahead of Larry
Clausen. Chad
Willet was third.
Brad Osborn of Janesville earned top
honors in qualifying for the Performance Concepts Late Models, turning the
Hawkeye Downs half-mile in 18.791 seconds for a lap speed of 95.791 mph.
In the 50-lap feature for that division,
Griffin McGrath
took the lead on lap seven and looked to be cruising towards victory when the
caution came out on the white flag lap as a couple cars got together. The
second place car of Brad Osborn got a great restart on the green-white-checkers
finish, stuck his nose under McGrath in turn one, finessed his way into the
lead, and took the checkered flag to score his first win of the season. Thor
Anderson finished second, Dudley Fleck was third, Ken Reiser was fourth and
early leader Jim Ross was fifth.
Scott Strauss picked up his first career
Miller Time Modified feature win Friday night in impressive fashion. Strauss started on the point , opened up an
early lead and then extended it over the course of the race. Strauss posted a
3.7 second margin of victory over Arlo Becker. Steve Stinger was third.
Dave McCalla racked up victory number
eight in the Budweiser Sportsmen feature event after starting in the third row.
That’s the most number of wins for any division at this point in the season.
Michael Weber crossed the stripe in
second followed by Andy Duggan.
Chad Siems
picked up his first win of the season in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock
Cars. Siems struggled a bit in the first part of the season but appears to have
the car working well now as he held off Dennis Hundley along with point leader
Bob Ahrendsen for the win.
Jeff Selfridge of Marion took top honors in the Sunline Hornets
driving a car normally piloted by John Schroer. The win was fitting as
Selfridge was one of the organizers of the Big Kids Helping Little Kids event.
Jake Blumer crossed the line in second while Brad Chandler was third.
Tony Olson made it two-for-two in the
IMCA Sportmods in winning his second feature of the night in that
division. Ryan Luedtke was second and
Brian Kauffman was third.
The Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby
Stocks had the night off and will run their make-up feature on Friday, August
17, which is Wall of Fame Night. In addition to inducting several new members
into the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame, the
Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks will be joined by Nostalgia Stocks, Miller
Time Modifieds, Budweiser Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars,
Sunline Hornets, IMCA Sportmods, and Go Karts.
