FREE RACES THIS WEEKEND AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

(Cedar Rapids, IA 7/29/03)—Race fans can attend two nights of auto racing free this weekend at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.

Friday night is the 4th annual “KHAK Free Race.” The radio station has given away thousands of free tickets. In case fans don’t get free tickets, they can purchase them at the regular price, $10 adults, $7 for senior citizens and students, at the Hawkeye Downs ticket office Friday. Children 11 and under are admitted free.

Saturday’s “Tobacco outlet Plus Short Track Saturday Night” program is also a “free race.” Fans won’t even need a ticket Saturday, as all gates will be open and everyone admitted free.

Racing starts at 7:30pm both nights.

Friday’s program includes Performance Concepts Late Models, Miller Time Modifieds, Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks, and Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars.

Saturday’s program features Lacey Plumbing Outlaws, Rock Solid Chassis Modifieds, Automotive Fuel Systems Stock Cars, Strauss Embroidery Women On Wheels, Barron Motor Supply Cruisers, tri County Car Company Hornets, and Bandeleros.

With just six weeks to go, the six “ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car Championship” point races are exceptionally competitive.

Just 4 points separate the top three drivers in Performance Concepts Late Models. Johnny Spaw and Jim Ross are tied for the lead, with last week’s feature winner Mike Ehde third, just 4 points back.

Only 22 points separate the top five drivers in Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen. Andy Duggan leads, with John Henecke second, 14 points out of first. Johnny Mudd, Curt Van Der Wal, and Scott Wennermark are also in contention.

Just 16 points separate the top 3 in Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks. Jim Hanson leads Arnie Reif by 16 points, with Bob Ahrendsen third, 16 points out of first.

Miller Time Modified division leader Larry Clausen has the largest lead, but it is far from safe. Clausen tops Bob Gase by 24 points.

Doug Simon has won 5 of the 7 Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars features, but his lead is only 13 points over Larry Silbaugh.

The Duffy’s Collectible Cars Legends return to the weekly line-up August 15. Tom Frady is the leader, just 8 points ahead of red hot Landon Cassill, who has won four in a row.
