TEN
FEATURES YIELD TEN DIFFERENT WINNERS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
By Brad Grupe
(Cedar Rapids,
IA 072701)—Ten different drivers,
including some first-time winners, visited Coca-Cola Victory Lane at Hawkeye
Downs Friday night as REXCO Bobcat presented double features. The Two-Driver
Cruisers joined the four main divisions of the ASA Racing/Hawk Performance/Papa
Johns Cup Championship Series for a night of racing which also included an
event dubbed “The Worlds Largest Bobcat Parade.”
Throw in a pre-race marriage proposal via the Aggregates Electronic
Message Board by Barron Motor Supply Thunderstock driver Aaron Meyer and it was
a full night of activities. Meyer, son of current Budweiser Sportsmen Driver JJ
Meyer proposed to girlfriend Jennifer with a little help from the message board
and received the “yes” he was looking for.
In racing action, Wade Prasil and TJ Schaefer each picked up wins in the
Aggregates Late Model division. Prasil slipped by Randy Coghlan with nine laps
remaining in the first Late Model feature and cruised to the win. Mike Ehde
finished in second with current points leader Curt Martin finishing third.
TJ Schaefer put his Mopar-powered Dodge Intrepid into victory lane for
the first time this season after passing Johnny Spaw on the ninth lap of the
second feature. Spaw, who had a week off from the ASA/ AC Delco Series before
they visit Hawkeye Downs next week, finished a strong second while Jim Ross
came in third.
Bob Ahrendsen picked up his first win of the season in the Budweiser
Sportsmen division leading the first of two Sportsmen features from start to
finish. JJ Meyer pulled close enough to challenge on a couple occasions but
Ahrendsen was able to hold him off.
Meyer finished second with point leader Curt VanDerWal crossing the
stripe in third.
Scot Johnson drove away with the second Sportsmen feature but there was
plenty of action behind him. Dave
Johnson and Johnny Mudd battled for second for a few laps before a touch sent
them spinning and to the back of the pack with just five laps to go. John
Henecke picked up the second spot when racing resumed and finished in that
position. Craig Bender came in third, posting one of his strongest finishes of
the season.
The Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks saw two drivers recording their first
wins of the season and of their careers according to Hawkeye Downs
records. The first feature went to Doug
Simon who built a huge lead and never looked back before collecting the
checkers. Chad Siems finished second with Randy Filling third.
Don Johnson, a longtime competitor at Hawkeye Downs, picked up his first
win after working his way through the pack from the fourth row and then
pressuring Ed O’Brien for several laps before taking the lead with just four
laps to go. Kurt Bohnsack brought home second while Jeff Franks was third.
The Coca-Cola Two Driver Cruisers were also in action with the tandem of
Darryl Jones and Scot Jones picking up the win over Shellie and Jerry O’Brien
after a wild last few laps. The team of Ken Perry/Darrin O’Brien was third.
The popular novelty class features one driver steering and operating the
brake while the other controls the throttle.
The second Cruiser feature was run in the opposite direction and saw Ken
Perry and Darrin O’Brien visiting victory lane after taking the lead with just
a couple laps to go. As in the first feature the last laps were action packed with
John Ness and Jamie Witham emerging in second place. Darryl and Scott Jones were
third.
The Miller Time Open Wheel Modifieds ran a couple spirited features with
Brian Allen grabbing the win in the first one. Allen was part of a group of
five cars trying for the lead in the closing laps. Allen passed John Troxel
with just two laps to go to land the win. Point leader Mike Schulte finished in
second with Scott Wennermark in third.
Bob Gase jumped into the lead early in the second Modified Feature and
then held off Mike Thomas over the last few laps to secure the win. Larry
Clausen finished a strong third.
