CHRISTMAS IN JULY WINS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
By Brad Grupe
(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA 07/25/03)- Santa Claus made
an early visit to Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night as Rexco Bobcat
presented Christmas In July. Joining in the celebration were the regular
divisions of the “ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car Championship” were
the Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars. The past couple weeks have seen the
best racing of the season at the point battles stay tight.
Scott
Wennermark of Cedar Rapids has come close to victory since joining the
Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen division but Friday night he emerged as the
winner of the 30-lap feature. The race featured some hard fought close quarters
racing throughout with Wennermark using an outside pass on lap 22 to grab the
point from Brian Franks. The two had battled sided-by-side for a couple laps
before making slight contact.
Wennermark,
the 1999 rookie of the year in the Modified division, started in eighth. Andy
Duggan, who visited Coca Cola Victory Lane last week, finished in second after
starting 10th. Brian Franks
finished in third after starting in 6th.
Mike
Ehde, who makes the trek to Hawkeye Downs from Prarie Du Chien, WI., edged out
Johnny Spaw and Jim Ross by the narrowest of margins to post the win in the
Performance Concepts Late Model feature. Ehde’s margin of victory was a scant
57-thousandths of a second over Ross according to Alliant Energy Timing and
Scoring. Johnny Spaw finished right behind Ross.
Ehde,
started in sixth before taking the win
while Ross started fourth and Spaw ninth. The finish puts Ross and Spaw tied
for the points lead with 436 points, while Ehde is just four points behind.
Max
Corporon picked up his third win of the season in the Miller Time Modifieds,
crossing the stripe comfortably ahead of Chad Willet and points leader Larry
Clausen. Corporon started his GM Crate Engine powered machine in fourth.
Willett started 6th on the
grid while Clausen was back in tenth as the green dropped.
The
Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks feature win went to Randy Filling as he posted
a 1.8 second win over Bob Ahrendsen. Filling, who was second in his last
outing, started inside the third row and took the lead from polesitter Ron Fisher
at the halfway mark of the race.
Ahrendsen
started in tenth and cruised through the pack to claim the second spot. He sits
third in points. Paul Walder finished in third after an eighth place start.
The
Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars returned to action of Friday night also
with Chad Siems finding his way to victory lane, which was decorated with
