FILLING, DVORAK WIN TWIN SUPER STOCK FEATURES AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar Rapids, IA 07/19/02)—Friday night July 19 was an exciting night for both past and present drivers at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Present day drivers Brad Dvorak and Randy Filling each claimed wins in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks, which ran a pair of 25 lap features.
As for the past, Hawkeye Downs
unveiled it’s new Wall of Fame and announced the first 10 inductees in a
special ceremony midway through Friday night’s program. The ‘wall’ is located on the east end of the
main grandstand and carries the names of the first group of inductees.
Recognized for their
achievements were former drivers Gus Schrader, Emory Collins, Johnny Hobel,
George Miller, Red Droste, Charlie Moffitt, Ramo Stott, and Darrell Dake. Also
inducted were Doc Hunter who was in charge of the grounds and track at Hawkeye
Downs in its early years as well as current All-Iowa Agricultural Association
member Ed Emerson. Many of the inductees were present for the ceremony with
those that are deceased represented by family members or friends.
Also on hand were a number of
restored Sprint, Midget, Silver Crown, and Super Modified cars. In addition to
being on display the cars put on a exhibition “race” as part of the “Hawkeye
Downs Historic Racing Reunion.”
In racing action in the ASA Papa
Johns Cup Championship Series presented by Iowa Wireless, Randy Filling took the lead with four laps
scored and cruised to an easy win in the first Barron Motor Supply Super Stock
feature. He was chased to the stripe by Doug Simon and Chad Siems. Filling won
by a comfortable margin with the rest of the pack grouped together as they
fought for position.
The second 25 lap Super Stock
feature was lined up based on a invert from the first feature. Race winner
Filling drew a “twelve” which placed him in the twelfth starting spot.
Defending Super Stock Champion
Brad Dvorak took the lead with 10 laps to go in the second feature and then
survived a late caution to secure the win. Dvorak’s Special K Motorsports
teammate Kurt Bohnsack finished in second while Jeff Franks notched a third
place finish.
In the Performance Concepts Late
Models, TJ Schaefer had the field covered like a blanket for 29 ½ laps of the
thirty lap feature when he was forced to back out of the throttle after
developing a severe vibration. That sent Johnny Spaw into the lead and into
Coca-Cola Victory Lane a half-lap later. Spaw, who’s having a much improved
season over the past several weeks started in ninth and steadily worked to the
front but was just out of reach of Schaefer before the mechanical problem
slowed Schaefer.
Rookie Ross Kurth finished an
impressive second with Scot Johnson of Ankeny in third.
Schaefer was able to limp across
in fourth with the vibration caused by broken wheel studs.
In the Miller Time
Modifieds, Larry Clausen posted his
second win of 2002 after taking the lead from Keith Gogel on lap nine of the
twenty-five lap feature event. Clausen built a huge lead over Gogel and Mike
Schulte which was erased by a caution with less than ten laps to go. Clausen
proved he still had the stronger car on the restart and finished comfortably
ahead of Gogel and Schulte.
Also racing Friday night were
Vintage Coupes and Nostalgia Stock Cars.
Bill Gerot took top honors in the Coupes in a six cylinder, besting Jeff
Selfridge who driving a V-8. Gaylord Bowers finished in third.
In the Nostalgia Stock cars
Craig Stepanek held off Jamie Huff for the win with Bill Bartholamew finishing
third.
