HAWKEYE DOWNS POINTS RACES REMAIN TIGHT AFTER “100.7/ THE FOX” FREE RACE NIGHT

(Cedar Rapids, IA 07/17/09)- Parity is alive and well at Cedar Rapids’ Hawkeye Downs Speedway after the latest round of “Papa Johns/ I-Wireless Championship Cup action on Friday night.

A jam-packed grandstand and a full field of cars were on hand for the annual 100.7 “The Fox” Free Race despite the unseasonably cool temperatures. It was also the Marion/East Cedar Rapids Rotay Club “Big Kids Helping Little Kids” night benefiting their organizations’ “Shoes for Kids” campaign as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The group also hosted a Candy Dash/Nickel Scramble for hundreds of children on hand.

On the track, the Two-Man Cruisers were back for another “Exhibition” appearance with a half-dozen entries this time around. The duo of Chris Duggan/Nick Friedlein, who used to run at the recently closed Echo Valley Speedway dominated the 10-lap feature with Mike McDonald/Rob Miller crossing the stripe in second. Matt Petrzelka/Quinton Embry were third.

Brian Beatty picked up his first win in Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars after a last-lap pass of Cory Houdek in the 20-lap feature. The two-battled the entire race after starting in the front row. The front five were running nose-to-tail with five laps remaining with Beatty making the winning pass on the back stretch.

Houdek finished second, Dennis Hundley third, Dave Ballstaedt fourth, and Bob Ahrendsen fifth.  Point leader Kurt Bohnsack battled a sour engine during the feature finishing seventh and shrinking his point lead over Houdek to just 10 points. Five different drivers have won features in the division so far this season.

The Sunline Hornets field continues to grow with 24 of the four-cylinder cars signed in Friday night. Point leader Shane Hanson picked up his first win of 2009 edging Derek Parrott for the win. The pair traded the lead  back and forth early in the feature before Hanson pulled away. Brogan Fiala Finished third while Bryce Bailey and Brad Chandler completed the top five. Hanson is the seventh different driver to win this season.

After suffering mechanical problems last week, Jeff Franks returned with a vengeance dominating the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks. Despite a couple cautions Franks kept his ride planted firmly in front of the pack while other cars battled for position behind. Roland Bohnsack stayed in the hunt for the points finishing second with Duayne Herb, Gary Pfantz, and Deb Mefford right behind.

Nathan Ballard took over the point lead after Scott Siems, who led Ballard by one point coming into Friday night, had an uncharacteristic ninth place finish. Five drivers have visited Coca-Cola Victory Lane in this division.

Moving to the half-mile, after running separate heat races, the Budweiser Sportsmen and Coors Light Modifieds ran a combined feature with the mods starting about a quarter-lap ahead of the sportsmen.

Arlo Becker notched his second win of the season,  finishing ahead of Ryan Luedtke, Tim Plummer, Larry Clausen, and Blake Carson. After coming into the night with one point separating them, Plummer and Clausen are now tied for the lead.  Tony Olson and Craig Bender also participated in the race but were not officially scored as they were doing final testing on a tire that the division will be using in the future.

Dave McCalla racked up his third win of the season in Budweiser Sportsmen, edging out Andy Duggan at the stripe. Kevin Lee posted another strong run finishing third with Doug Simon and Travis Thompson also in the top five.  McCalla has just a one –point lead over Duggan in the standings after Friday night.

Curt VanDerWal only needed two weeks to pick up his first win of 2009 after sitting out the first part of the season.  VanDerWal started up front after winning an earlier heat race and was never challenged despite cautions that reshuffled the field.  Griffin McGrath crossed the stripe in second with Brad Dvorak in third. Those two traded positions throughout the race.  Point leader Joey Gase finished fourth and widened his point lead a bit by finishing ahead of Brad Osborn, who sits in second in the points.  Six different drivers have won features in late models.

Action continues next Friday night, July 24 with Miller Lite Late Models, Budweiser Mid-AM Sportsmen, Coors Light Modifieds, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA SportMods, and Sunline Hornets all on the card.
