HISTORIC RACING REUNION THIS FRIDAY, JULY 19

 

(Cedar Rapids, IA  7/16/02)—Hawkeye Downs Speedway presents a “Historic racing Reunion” this Friday night, July 19. Five racing classes will be in action, including three “ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stocks car Championship” divisions.

 

            The highlight will be the “Barron Motor Supply Twin 25’s.” Two 25 lap features will be held for all cars will full pay and points in each feature. Other weekly divisions racing are Performance Concepts late Models and Miller Time Modifieds.

 

            Special attractions racing Friday are Nostalgia Stock Cars and Vintage Coupes. The Nostalgia Stocks are 1960s and 1970s Late Model style cars. The Vintage Coupes are 19202, 1930s, and 1940s Modifiedf style cars.

 

            Restored Historic Race Cars, including Sprint Cars, Midgets, Dirt Championship Cars, and Indy Cars will be on display. Many of the Historic Race Cars will take to the track for a special demonstration.

 

            Also Friday, 10 area racing greats will be inducted into the “Hawkeye Downs Speedway Wall of Fame.” The Wall, on the East side of the main grandstand, will be unveiled Friday. The 10 racing great, or their survivors, will be on hand for special induction ceremonies.

 

            Author Bill Hill, who has written several books on historic auto racing, will be on hand Friday for a book signing.

 

            Friday’s program is very important for Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks, with two weeks worth of racing. Defending champ Brad Dvorak is the point leader, with Doug Simon 8 points back in second. Dvorak’s teammate Kurt Bohnsack is third, 20 points out of first.

 

            Brian Gibson is still the Performance Concepts Late Models leader, 22 points ahead of runner-up Mike Ehde and 24 points ahead of third place Johnny Spaw.

 

            Multi-time champ Mike Schulte leads the Miller Time Modifieds, with a 26 point lead over Brian Allen, and a 32 point lead over Bob Gase.

 

            Grandstand gates open and practice starts at 6pm Friday, with Racing at 7:30pm. Adult grandstand admission is $10, Senior Citizens and Students $7, and Children 11 and Under Free with paying adult.
