SEA, SIMON AND MEFFORD AMONG JULY 13 SHORT TRACK SATURDAY NIGHT WINNERS
(Cedar Rapids, IA 07/13/02) After a several rainouts early in the season, Short Track Saturday Night has seen several successful nights of racing at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
Doug Simon continues to dominate
the Lacey Plumbing Outlaw Super Stocks and has built a substantial lead in that
division. Simon’s most recent trip to victory lane saw him finish ahead of Dave Coghlan, Sr. and Scott Grady.
Marty Sea wound up as the winner
in the Automotive Fuel Systems feature finishing ahead of the Mike Walsh/Kevin
Korsmo entry. The points stay with the cars in the Short Track Saturday Night
divisions so it isn’t always clear who is driving a particular car. Finishing behind point leaders Walsh/Korsmo was Chuck Gaulke.
Deb Mefford notched the win in
the Wholly Smokes Women On Wheels edging out Danielle Auen and Jodi Cranston.
Mefford has a fifty point edge in the point standings over Dana Scott.
The tandem of Matt Poduska/Brian Dvorak topped the field in the Barron Motor Supply
Two-driver Cruisers besting current point leaders Shellie O’Brien Perry and
Jerry O’Brien. Scott Siems and Chris
Shakespeare finished in third.
Tim Plummer took top honors in
the Rock Solid Chassis Short Track Modifieds with Derrick Bliss second and
current point leader Dave Coghlan, Sr. Coghlan has a narrow lead in the points
chase with Bliss and Plummer both within a few points of the top slot.
The Vintage Coupes continue to
Provide some exciting racing along Jeff
Selfridge and Bill Gerot dominating the action.
Jeff Selfridge was able to wrestle the lead from
Bill Gerot's Six Cylinder on lap 5 and won the
combined
Vintage Coupe Feature. The two started
in the second row and Gerot got to the front first
and
Selfridge chased him for a lap and then they went side-by-side for a three laps
until Selfridge
finally
got by. A spin involving Dan Haack brought out the caution, bunched the field,
and Gerot
made
a spirited challenge for the lead. He
was unable to make the pass and had to settle for
second
to Selfridge. They were followed to the stripe by Jerry Keeney and Jim
Thurston. It was
the
third feature win for Selfridge in the V-8 Division and the fourth for Gerot in
the SIX-cylinder
Division.
