VAN DER WAL CRUISES TO HAWKEYE DOWNS SPORTSMAN WIN

FLECK, FRANKS EARN VICTORIES ALSO

By Brad Grupe

(Cedar Rapids, IA  071202)—Defending Budweiser Sportsmen champion and current point leader Curt Van Der Wal of Ankeny chalked up win number five of the 2002 campaign at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night, winning the “Budweiser Sportsmen 50.”

Van Der Wal worked toward the front after starting in row five and slipped inside Johnny Mudd on the 28th lap. The two raced side-by- side for a couple laps before Van Der Wal pulled away for good.

Andy Duggan held the early lead before relinquishing the point to Mudd on lap 16. Mudd finished the race in second followed by JJ Meyer, Kevin Lee, and Brian Franks.

The race was halted briefly when several cars collided in turn one. Earlier in the evening, during a heat race, Mel Schappert and Paul Walder got together sending Walder onto his top into the soft walls in turn one. Walder wasn’t injured in the crash.

Dudley Fleck of Cedar Rapids posted a flag-to-flag win in the  30 lap Performance Concepts Late Models feature finishing ahead of Ross Kurth,  current point leader Brian Gibson, Jeff King, and Johnny Spaw. The win was the second of the season for Fleck.

In other “ASA/Papa Johns Cup Championship presented by Iowa Wireless” action, Jeff Franks of Rowley picked up his second visit to Coca-Cola Victory Lane of the season winning the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks feature. Franks took command of the race on the ninth lap using the high groove to perfection. The race featured three-wide racing through the pack which stayed tightly bunched throughout the feature

Finishing behind Franks were Kurt Bohnsack, Brad Dvorak, Randy Filling and John Ness.

For awhile it looked as though the Foreman Hydraulics Legends feature was some kind of elimination race as the numbers dwindled thanks to multiple collisions.  When the checkers finally waved Chris Sevey of Waterloo wound up in victory lane finishing ahead of young Ross Zumbach, Gene Peterson, Tom Frady and Kevin Foreman.

The Miller Time Modifieds had the night off but return to action on July 19.

(NOTE: The Budweiser Sportsmen 50 was taped for broadcast as part of the Smirnoff Ice TV Racing Series. The one hour show will air Sunday, July 14 at Noon on Fox 28/40.  It will also be replayed on Mediacom Cable Cannel 10 in the coming weeks.)
