SPAW, KORSMO, CASSILL, HINRICHS, AND SCOTT POST MID SEASON WINS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 7/11/03)—The “Junge Automotive Group Mid Season Championships” were
on tap Friday with longer features, lineups determined on a draw-based invert,
and on-track driver introductions.
The four divisions of the “ASA Papa
Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car Championships” were in action along with the
Duffy’s Collectible Cars INEX Legends.
Johnny Spaw, the defending champion,
started outside row three and won the
35 lap Performance Concepts Late Model feature after taking the lead on the
third lap. Spaw used the high side to grab the lead from polesitter Brad Osborn and then easily outdistanced the
field for the win. Osborn posted a second place finish while Billy Bennett
finished third.
Point leader Jim Ross got caught up
in an incident at the beginning of lap two which saw several cards tangle in
turn one.
Kevin Korsmo piloted his machine to
the win in the Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen feature after starting on the
pole. Korsmo, running eighth in points coming into Friday night, earned the
pole after the top eight in points were inverted based on the draw used to set
the lineup.
John Henecke, current point leader, worked his way through the front half of the
pack to finish in second after starting eighth. Alliant Energy Timing and
Scoring showed Henecke turning some faster laps over the course of the race but
the Korsmo’s lead was too great to overcome. Brian Franks finished in third.
Landon Cassill, driving in two
divisions for the first time in 2003, bagged yet another win in the Duffy’s
Collectible Cars Legends feature. The
14 year old from Fairfax picked up his fourth straight feature win after
starting sixth in the 20 lap event.
Ross Zumbach finished second and Tom Frady was third.
Kyle Hinrichs picked up his first
career Miller Time Modified win after starting on the pole. Hinrichs moved to
the half-mile this season after winning the Legends division last year.
Hinrichs was able to blast away from the field as the green dropped while some
good battles raged behind. Current point leader Larry Clausen started in fourth
and finished in second while rookie Shawn Stinger posted a third place finish.
Jayson Scott built a sizable lead in
the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks feature only to have it erased by a couple
caution flags late in the race. When racing in the 35 lap feature resumed Scott
was able to fend off Scott Grady and Kurt Bohnsack to seal the victory. The top
five ran nearly nose to tail over the last few laps.
Friday night also saw the debut of
the Performance Concepts Racing Experience Late Model. The car features a
passenger seat that allows participants to experience laps at near race speed
on the Hawkeye Downs half-mile.
