MID-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS FRIDAY AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

(Cedar Rapids, IA 7/9/03)—Hawkeye Downs Speedway presents the “Junge Automotive Group Mid Season Championships” this Friday night, July 11. All five “ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car Championship” divisions will be in action. Gates open and practice starts at 6pm with Racing at 7:30pm. Adult admission is $10, Senior Citizens and Students are admitted for $7, and Children 11 and Under are admitted Free.

The Mid Season Championships will have feature races that are five laps longer than normal. Unlike most tracks, Hawkeye Downs does not start its Mid Season Championships with the point leaders up front. Line-ups are set by overall points standings, but are inverted by 8, 10, or 12 depending on draw.

As is the custom with the Mid Season and Season Championships at Hawkeye Downs, drivers and crews will be introduced to the crowd prior to their feature race.

All five point races are close at the half way point of the season.

Jim Ross leads the Performance Concepts Late Models, just 20 points ahead of Mike Ehde. Defending champ Johnny Spaw, who has won 2 features in a row, is third, 30 points behind Ross.

Larry Clausen has a 20 point lead over Bob Gase in the Miller Time Modifieds. Brian Allen is third, 22 points behind Clausen.

John Henecke, the 2000 champion, leads 2001 and 2002 champion Curt Van Der Wal by just two points in Budweiser Late Models Sportsmen. Andy Duggan is third, only 6 points out of first.

Second year driver Jim Hanson has a 10 point lead over Arnie Reif in Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks. Sonny Parker is third, 34 points off the leader’s pace.

Veteran Tom Frady leads rookie Landon Cassill by 12 points in Duffy’s Collectible Cars Legends. Cassill has won three straight features.

An interesting side note Friday; Cassill, who turned 14 years old this week, will make his return to the Miller Time Modified division. He raced once last year, until track management ruled he had to wait until he was 14  to race on the half mile. Cassill will join another young driver, 15 year old Kyle Hinrichs, in the Modified division.
