SCHLIPMAN OUTLASTS SCHRADER, OSBORN AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
SPAW TOPS HAWKEYE DOWNS LATE MODELS
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 070902)—Terry Schlipman
probably thought the 50-lap IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at
Hawkeye Downs Speedway would never end. After taking the point on lap 10
Schlipman never relinquished the lead but he did have to stave off repeated
challenges from Ken Schrader and Brad Osborn as the caution flag waved several
times during the latter stages of the race.
Schlipman, of Mendon, IL started
in the front row while Schrader, who flew in from Indianapolis to race and sign
autographs, started back in the sixth
row. Schrader quickly moved into the second slot but never was able to sustain
a move for the lead.
The other driver in the mix was
Brad Osborn, who started in sixth and made repeated attempts to maneuver around
Schrader. Osborn led most of last year’s race before breaking a driveshaft with
just two laps to go, giving Schrader the win.
Tom Darbyshire of Morning Sun,
IA finished fourth behind Schlipman, Schrader and Osborn with Brent Slocum of
Burlington finishing fifth.
In addition to several cautions,
the race was red-flagged briefly when Tysus Pattee flipped after a mishap with
just a couple laps to go. Tysus was not injured but was unable to continue.
Heat winners leading up to the
50-lap feature were Michael Cothren,Moline,IL;
Lonnie Bailey of Quincy, IL; and Brad Osborn of Janesville, IA.
The Hawkeye Downs Performance
Concepts Late Models also were in action Tuesday night running a dash, heats
and a 30 lap feature.
Jim Ross of Cedar Rapids
collected the win in the Tri-County Car Company Dash while Jeff King, also of
Cedar Rapids and Lorin Kurth of Waukon bagged heat wins.
Ross appeared to have the
fastest car on the track during the feature as he took command with six
circuits remaining after starting in the fourth row. Ross took the lead from
Lorin Kurth but as Kurth tried to battle back the two touched and spun putting
Johnny Spaw into the lead.
Spaw easily outdistanced the
field from that point after starting back in 11th. Jeff King, posted
a great effort, finishing in second after starting on the pole. Likewise, Scott
Delsing had a good finish crossing the stripe in third after also starting in
third. Randy Coghlan continued his run
of consistent finished crossing the stripe in fourth. Doug Hite finished in the
fifth slot.
