MCGRATH SCORES FIRST MODIFIED WIN AT
HAWKEYE
WILLIAMS, SHAFFAR AND AHRENDESEN ARE WINNERS
(
Just
a few weeks ago McGrath, who’s just in his second full year of racing, was involved
in a fiery crash on the backstretch that nearly destroyed his car.
McGrath
held a brief lead early in the race as he bolted into the lead following a
restart but then settled back into third as Bob Gase and Arlo Becker got by
him. On lap thirteen Becker and Gase spun as Becker was trying to pass Gase
which put McGrath back in control of the race.
On
the restart McGrath roared away from the field and wasn’t challenged until point
leader Tim Plummer caught up and made a last lap bid for the lead. McGrath was able
to slam the door on Plummer and crossed the Lint Millwright Finish Line .128 seconds
ahead of Plummer. Becker rallied from the earlier spin to finish in third while
Pat Flannagan was fourth and
In
quarter-mile action featuring the “Full Throttle Energy Drink Stars of Tomorrow”,
Creston Williams of Atkins racked up his first career win in the Marines.com
Hornets division. Williams started outside the second row in the 12 lapper and
took the lead with 5 laps remaining after leader Samantha Blumer faltered. Rick

After
leading much of the Barron Motor Supply
IMCA Stock Car feature, Logan Hale surrendered the lead to Bob Ahrendsen with
just 4 laps to go in the event. Ahrendsen tried an outside pass following a lap
six caution but Hale was able to hold him off until Ahrendsen squeezed under
him with four to go. Ahrendsen then had
to hold off Brad Dvorak on the last lap posting a winning margin of just .116
seconds according to Alliant Energy Transponder Timing and Scoring. Randy Filling finished third with Doug Simon
and Cory Houdek coming on strong in fourth and fifth.
In
other half-mile action, the Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen ran a pair of
features with Craig Bender of
The
second Sportsmen feature saw Andy Duggan pick up his second win of the season
after starting outside the second row. Duggan reeled in leader Kevin Franks and
took the point on lap 8. Finishing behind Duggan were point leader Kevin Korsmo,
Dave McCalla, Martin Ballard and Franks.
The
Performance Concepts Late Models also ran a pair of twenty-lap features with
last seasons’ champ Brad Osborn picking up his second trip to Coca-Cola Victory
lane this season. Last week’s winner,
Scott Wennermark, scored the win in the other late Model feature.
Brad
Osborn has struggled a bit this season with motor problems but showed no
effects of that on Friday night. Osborn took the lead from point leader Johnny
Spaw on lap five and then sailed to the win. Denny Osborn, Brad’s father,
crossed the stripe in second, over two seconds behind. Jim Ross returned to
Hawkeye Downs Friday night to finish in third. Spaw, who’s been battling apparent
motor problems, held on to fourth while Jeff King was fifth.
The
second late Model feature saw Kyle Hinrichs of Swisher take an early lead only
to see his lead evaporate as a yellow Book Yellow Flag bunched the field. Scott Wennermark of Ely tried a high groove
pass shortly after the restart but couldn’t make the move stick. Five laps
later Wennermark was able to nose under Hinrichs to take command of the race
and he was not challenged the rest of the way.
Hinrichs maintained second with Jeff King, Denny Osborn and Brad Osborn
coming in third, fourth, and fifth respectively. The win was the second in as many weeks for Wennermark.
