BRIAN ALLEN TOPS MODIFIEDS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
SIMON , HENECKE, HINRICHS EARN WINS ALSO
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 07/05/02)—Brian Allen of
Hiawatha made winning look easy Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on
Hochstetler Towing night. Allen took home a hefty $1000 paycheck in winning the
“Sperry Engines 40” for Miller Time Modifieds. The race was the longest of the
year for the division.
Allen started outside row five,
worked his way toward the front and seized the lead from Arlo Becker on lap nine
using the outside grove to perfection. Allen amassed a huge lead in the
caution-free race and finished a full straight ahead of Larry Clausen and point leader Mike Schulte. The win was the third of the season for Allen. Bob Gase finished in
fourth while Keith Gogel collected the fifth slot.
In other “ASA Papa Johns Cup
presented by Iowa Wireless” action, Doug Simon finally found Coca-Cola Victory
Lane on Friday night. Simon has led the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks points chase much of the season thanks to
consistent finishes, but Friday night was his first win of 2002. Simon took
advantage of a front row starting slot and bolted into the lead on the second
trip around the quarter-mile. A trio of Special K Motorsports drivers-Kurt
Bohnsack, Brad Dvorak, and Bob Ahrendsen crossed the stripe behind Simon. Jeff Franks finished fifth.
Johns Henecke picked up his
second win of the season passing pole sitter Craig Bender on lap two in route
to the checkered flag in the Budweiser Sportsmen division. Defending champion
Curt Van Der Wal, who started in the fifth row, made things interesting in the closing laps but couldn’t close
enough distance to mount a serious challenge. Craig Bender finished third with former Modified driver Scott Wennermark
finishing fourth in just his second outing in a car with fenders. Wennermark
also picked up the dash win earlier in the program. Ron Fisher rounded out the
top five.
Kyle Hinrichs continued his
winning ways in the Foreman Hydraulics Legends division finding victory lane
after starting in the third row. The Swisher teen picked up his fourth win of
the season and also won a “dash” event earlier in the evening. Kevin Foreman
followed Hinrichs to the checkers with
Eric Appleget, Tom Frady, and
Chris Sevey next across the stripe.
The
Performance Concepts Late Models had the night off.
