SPAW,
MUDD, WILLETT, FRANKS, CASSILL, AND SIMON CLAIM JULY 4th WINS AT
HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 07/04/03)—Once every few years Independence Day falls on a Friday
and this time around Hawkeye Downs elected to proceed with racing. Earlier in
the day a picnic and open house was held complete with music from “The Bad
Actors.” Fireworks followed the race program which was precented by 100.7 The
Fox and Cedar Rapids Toyota.
On the track, multi-time track champion Johnny Spaw
notched his second win of the season in the Performance Concepts Late Model
division. Spaw sliced through the field, taking the lead within eight laps
after starting inside the fourth row. Spaw kept his foot in it and made a
three-wide pass on lap eight to secure the point and then pulled away from the
field.
Jim Ross had the best shot at Spaw
after a late caution flag but Spaw cruised to a comfortable win when racing
resumed, finishing .481 seconds ahead of Ross, who is the current point leader.
Denny Osborn finished in third, Randy Coghlan fourth, and Scott Delsing fifth.
In other ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa
Wireless Stock Car Championship action, Johnny Mudd of Cedar Rapids won his
third feature of the season in the Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen division,
this time using a back-up motor. The race saw four different leaders in the
early going before Mudd took control for good. Mudd finished 3.345 seconds
ahead of defending champion Curtis Van Der Wal according to Alliant Energy
Timing and Scoring. Andy Duggan finished third.
Second year Miller Time Modified
driver Chad Willett picked up his first career feature win on Friday night
holding off Arlo Becker for the win. Willett started on the point of the 25-lap
event and finished .187 seconds ahead of the veteran Becker. Max Corporon
scored third place in the caution free feature.
Kevin Franks picked up his first win
of the season in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks feature leading every lap
after starting on the pole. Paul Walder used the outside groove to make a bid
for the lead in the closing laps but Franks was able to hold him off. Jim
Hanson was third.
Landon Cassill picked up yet another
win in the Duffy’s Collectible Cars Legends feature, beating Tom Frady and
Keith Meyer to the stripe.
Cassill, of Fairfax, will begin
doing double duty next week as he will have met the minimum age requirement to
also begin competing in the Miller Time Modified division.
Doug Simon returned to Coca-Cola
Victory Lane after winning the 15-lap Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Car
feature. Chad Siems finished in second ahead of Richard Quail.
