WEEKLY DIVISIONS BACK IN ACTION FOR FOURTH OF JULY SPECIAL
(Cedar Rapids, IA 7/2/03)—After a week off, the “ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car Championship” returns to action this Friday night, July 4 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. A special all day Independence Day celebration is planned, including Fireworks after the races.
Six divisions will be in action;
Performance Concepts Late Models. Miller Time Modifieds, Budweiser Late Models
Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks, Duffy’s Collectible Cars Legends,
and Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars.
A free open house/party will be held
from Noon to 3pm. Race cars will be on display at the track, drivers will be
available for autographs, and the band “Bad Actors” will perform. Fans are
encouraged to bring picnic lunches or tailgate. Concessions will be available
for those electing not to cook.
The grandstand will be cleared at
3pm, and gates will re-open and tickets will go on sale at 4pm. Practice will
start at 4pm, with racing starting early, at 6pm, with Fireworks after the
races. Regular admission prices remain in effect, Adults $10, Senior Citizens
and Students $7, and Children 11 and Under Free.
Friday’s race begins a string of 10
straight weeks of racing to finish out the season for the weekly competitors.
The points races remain close.
In Performance Concepts Late Models,
Jim Ross is the leader, 10 points ahead
of Mike Ehde and 32 points ahead of defending champ Johnny Spaw.
In Miller Time Modifieds, Larry
Clausen is the leader, 24 points ahead of Brian Allen. Bob Gase is third, 26
points back.
John Henecke is the Budweiser Late
Model Sportsmen leader. Henecke has a 12 point lead over Curtis Van Der Wal and
a 14 point lead over Andy Duggan.
Jim Hanson leads the Barron Motor
Supply Super Stocks. Arnie Reif is second, 8 points out of first. Bob Ahrendsen
and Sonny Parker are tied for third, 30 points behind the leader.
Veteran Tom Frady tops the Duffy’s
Collectible Cars Legends. Frady leads rookie Landon Cassill by 18 points. Eric
Appleget is third, 32 points out.
Doug Simon leads the Special K
Motorsports IMCA Stock Car standings, 3 points ahead of last week’s winner
Larry Silbaugh. Ronnie Godwin is third, 8 points out of first.
