NAYLOR,
SCHULTE, VANDERWAL POST HAWKEYE DOWNS WINS
(Cedar Rapids, IA
062901)—Dave Naylor of Scotch Grove posted his first win of the 2001 campaign in
the Aggregates Late Model “Powerade 50” at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday
night. Naylor powered around Jim Ross on the seventh circuit of the ‘Downs
half-mile and cruised to a seemingly easy win. The win came during Schoon’s
Mid-Season Championships. Naylor finished well ahead of Greg Kastli with TJ
Schaefer, Wade Prasil and Curt Martin rounding out the top five.
Norway’s
Mike Schulte put another notch in his belt Friday night by winning yet another
feature win in the Miller Time Modifieds. Schulte started the thirty-lap race
in the sixth row and picked his way toward the front, taking the lead on the 11th
lap and eventually colleting his sixth checkered flag of the season. Trent Ross
posted another strong performance finishing second with Bob Gase, Scott
Wennermark and Jim Williams the rest of the top five.
Curt
VanDerWal was the first to admit that he may not have been able to catch Johnny
Mudd without the caution that that came out with eight laps remaining in the
Budweiser Sportsmen feature. Mudd was
cruising well ahead of VanDerWal and the rest of the pack before the yellow
flag came out. It took a couple laps
after the restart and VanDerWal took the lead and posted his fourth win of the
year. Mudd finished in second with Scot Johnson, Paul Walder and Andy Duggan
crossing the stripe to fill out the top of the finishing order.
Brian
Helle and Chad Siems each visited Coca-Cola Victory Lane after winning features
in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks. Helle held off the challenges of Bob
Ahrendsen and Derrick Griesehop in the closing laps to preserve the win. Chad
Siems has come close to visiting Victory Lane a couple of times since switching
from Thunderstocks to Super Stocks and Friday night he got the job done,
posting the wire-wire win over Aric Becker, who applied some heavy pressure
toward the end of the 25 lapper. Jeff Franks was third with Brad Dvorak and Kurt
Bohnsack fourth and fifth.
Al
Smith of Rockford, Il not only won the feature in the A-1 Performance Marine
Legends Friday night but has also earned the distinction as the only driver
that has been able to beat BJ Goodin this season. Smith started outside row one
and quickly built a huge lead but Goodin was coming hard through the pack. By
the time Goodin cleared the rest of the pack Smith had built what proved to be
an insurmountable lead. Bob Havlik, Kevin Foreman and Chris Sevey rounded out
the top five.
A pair of exhibition Go Kart features were also on the
card with Kevin Williams winning the Briggs and Stratton division and Derek
Walker taking the win in the Yamaha division. Go Kart racing is held on the
Hawkeye Downs quarter-mile each Sunday afternoon.
