( Cedar Rapids, IA  06/28/02)—Some familiar faces and names shared Coca-Cola Victory Lane with some not so familiar ones at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night. The “ASA/Papa Johns Cup Championship presented by Iowa Wireless” reached the mid-point of the season with Schoon’s Chevy-Pontiac sponsoring the  Mid-Season Championships.

All five divisions were in action running longer features with the field set by an invert of point leaders set by a draw.

Crystal Horn of Cedar Rapids was the first to visit victory lane leading the 30 lap Foreman Hydraulics Legends feature from start to finish. Horn, who is a newcomer to the Legends posted the win over Kevin Foreman of Cedar Rapids and Chris Sevey of Waterloo. The win was the first for Horn.

Randy Filling, Toddville, earned his first feature win in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks. Filling started in row four and used the high groove to work his way through traffic to the front. He took command of the race on lap 9, wrestling the lead away from Cory Houdek.

Last year’s season champ. Brad Dvorak finished in second with Cory Houdek finishing in third.

Norway driver Mike Schulte picked up his first Miller Time Modified feature win of the season. The multi-time track champion started on the outside of row four and quickly work to the front, taking the lead with just five laps scored.  The race was interrupted five times by the caution flag but Schulte pulled away to a safe lead on each restart.

Larry Clausen was Schulte’s closest pursuer while Brian Allen finished in third.

A long week of work on the Budweiser Sportsmen car of Brian Franks paid off Friday night as the Central City driver won the thirty-lap feature in that division. Several cautions kept the field bunched but Franks made good use of the high groove and took control of the race on lap 15. The win was the second of the season for Franks.

Curt Van Der Wal, who started alongside Franks in row six, made a late charge to finish in second. Martin Ballard finished in third from a third row start.

Johnny Spaw returned to victory lane Friday night, posting a dominating performance in the 35 lap Performance Concepts Late Models feature. Spaw started in row two, used a high pass to get by rookie Brad Osborn on lap 4 and quickly left the rest of the field behind in earning the win.

Osborn, who’s in his first season on the pavement, finished in second while Scot Johnson of Ankeny recorded a third-place finish.
