MID-SEASON TITLES AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
BINDER, SHAFFAR EARN QUARTER-MILE VICTORIES
(Cedar Rapids,
IA 062405)—Hawkeye Downs Speedway crowned six
mid-season champions on Friday night as Mark Zimmerman Ford presented the 2005
Mid-season Championships.
Connie
Binder of Clutier earned top honors in the Marines. com Hornets division,
taking the lead after a late caution in the 12 lap race. Point leader Rick
Gallo of Center Point finished second with Derrick Beadle of Hiawatha third.
While
Binder earned the winners’ hardware, Gallo also received the “Papa Johns
Mid-Season Championship Cup” for leading the points in that division.
Terry
Shaffar of State Center continued his conquest of the Barron Motor Supply Hobby
Stocks, winning his fifth race of the
season after a somewhat rocky start, Shaffar needed just about the entire race
to work his way through the pack, taking control with just one lap remaining
after battling Brandon Herb and Tim Dains for about three laps. The division
point leader, Brandon Herb of Marion,
crossed the Lint Millwright Start-Finish Line in second with Tim Dains in
third. Dains led much of the early portion of the fifteen lap event.
Herb
earned the Papa Johns “halfway hardware” for leading the points at mid-season.
Brad
Dvorak held off a very determined Bob Ahrendsen to claim the checkers in the
Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car feature. Dvorak, of Cedar Rapids, used a
lapped car to his advantage late in the race to thwart a challenge from
Ahrendsen. Chad Siems of Mt. Auburn
posted a third place finish.
Dvorak
also took home the Papa Johns Cup for leading the points at mid-season.
Moving
to the half-mile, Landon Cassill chalked up his second win of the season in the
Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen 30 lap feature. Cassill started outside row one
and led the entire race leaving the rest of the field well behind. The Fairfax teenager finished
1.7 seconds ahead of current point leader Kevin Korsmo, of Atkins according to
Alliant Energy Timing and Scoring. Kevin Lee of Cedar Rapids crossed the stripe in third.
Korsmo,
who has 7 feature wins this season, is leading the points at mid-season and
took home the Papa Johns Cup.
The
Miller Time Modified feature had an uncharacteristic number of Yellowbook
Yellow Flags but despite that, Bob Gase of Cedar Rapids was able to pick up his first trip
to Coca-Cola Victory Lane
of the season. Gase held off point leader Tim Plummer who tried passes both
high and low but couldn’t make the move stick.
Gase led the race earlier but lost the lead to Pat Flannagan on a
restart before retaking the point on lap 21 of the scheduled 30-lapper.
Plummer
didn’t go home empty handed though as he collected the Papa Johns Cup for
leading the points in addition to finishing second in the race. Pat Flannagan recorded
a third place finish.
Kyle
Hinrichs of Swisher scored his second win in a row in the Performance Concepts
Late Models taking the lead from JJ Meyer of Cedar Rapids with just six laps remaining.
Meyer had led the entire race to that point but he couldn’t hold off the faster
Hinrichs. Meyer held on to second, which is his best finish of the season. Jeff
King of Cedar Rapids
finished a strong third in the thirty lap event.
Racing
continues with all six divisions in action next Friday night, July 1 including
a special 80-lap “80th anniversary”
race for the late models. Several cars from the Madison Speedway are expected
to join the field for this event.
