WINGED OUTLAW SPRINTS, TRUCKS, FORMULA INDYS FRIDAY
(Cedar Rapids, IA 6/24/03)—Winged Outlaw Sprint Cars make their only appearance of the season this Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. The “O’Reilly Auto Parts Winged Sprint Invitational” will feature cars and drivers from the nation’s two premier pavement Winged Sprint series, “Hoosier Outlaw Super Sprints” and “ Auto Value Super Sprints” series. The race is sanctioned by the Hoosier Outlaw Super Sprints.
Five
other touring divisions will round out Friday’s unique program. Also on the
card are Mid-American Super Trucks, NAMRA Formula Indy’s, Special K Motorsports
IMCA Stock Cars, Nostalgia Late Models and Sportsmen, and Midwest Stock Car
Classics. Grandstand Gates open and practice starts at 5pm with Time Trials at
6:30pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
A field
of 20-24 Winged Outlaw Sprint Cars are expected. Leading the Winged Sprint
entry list is Denny England of Warsaw, IN. England has won three of the four
Hoosier Outlaw Super Sprints features this year and leads their points
standings. England set the all time Hawkeye Downs Speedway track record at
15.565 last year. England and the other drivers will be after that record in
Friday’s time trials.
The
Mid-American Super Trucks are making their second and final appearance of the
season. Bill Prietzel of Frankline, WI won the Super Truck race May 2 at
Hawkeye Downs, and will return to try and make it two in a row Friday. A field
of 20-24 Trucks is expected.
The
Formula Indy’s return to Hawkeye Downs after a one year absence. The cars are
just like IRL and CART cars, only slightly smaller. Scott Miller of
Kendallville, IN won the most recent Formula Indy race at Hawkeye Downs in
2001, and is among the entries for the event.
Special
K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars will make their 4th appearance of the
season at Hawkeye Downs Friday. Doug Simon of Marion, IA has won all three
previous events this season, and leads the points.
The
Nostalgia Late Models and Sportsmen are making their second appearance of the season
at Hawkeye Downs. The cars are either restored cars or replicas of short track
cars from the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s.
A new
division racing Friday is the Midwest Stock Car Classics. The cars are restored
NASCAR Winston Cup and Grand National cars. They will race and be on display.
