HANK LOWER WINS AVSS WINGED OUTLAW FEATURE

SCHULTE, GOODIN REPEAT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

(Cedar Rapids, IA 06/23/01)—Hank Lower of Angola, IN held on to win the 50-lap finale of the Splash/Hoosier Tire/Freedom Festival Winged Sprint Nationals at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Saturday night.  Lower held off a ferocious charge from Mike Ling and Gary Fedewa in the closing laps to preserve the lead and take the win.

 

24 AVSS Winged Sprint cars started the feature, which was divided into 2-25 lap segments. Crews were allowed to make adjustments and add fuel at the break without penalty. Six teams elected to change tires at the break, which sent them to the back for the final 25 circuits.

 

            In other AVSS action Tim Cox won the 20 lap Last Chance Qualifier. That race started 22 cars and transferred 12 into the main event.  A total of 37 AVSS participated in the two-day show. That number represented an all-time record for the series.

 

            Mike Schulte returned to Coca-Cola Victory Lane after winning a 25-lap feature for the Miller Time Modifieds. Schulte snagged the lead from Trent Ross on lap 9 and cruised to a relatively easy win. The win was the fifth of the season for the Norway veteran.  Ross finished in the second slot followed by Arlo Becker, Larry Clausen and John Troxel.

 

            Mike Brecht won the first of two 25-lap features for the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks. Brecht took the lead from Merv Chandler and finished ahead of Roger Merta, Don Johnson, Doug Simon and Brad Helle.

 

            Aric Becker posted a flag-to-flag win in the second Super Stock feature finishing ahead of Derrick Griesehop.  Becker appeared to have a comfortable lead for most of the race before fading a bit in the closing laps. Jeff Franks, Clint Houdek and Brian Franks rounded out the top five.

 

            BJ Goodin took all of 5 laps to go from last to first in the 25-lap A-1 Performance Marine feature. The win was Goodin’s fourth of the 2001 season at Hawkeye Downs. Tom Frady, Bob Havlik, Kyle Hinrichs and Gene Peterson filled out the rest of the top five in that feature.
