BIG MODIFIED RACE FRIDAY AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar Rapids, IA
6/16/03)—The season’s richest and longest Miller Time Modified race is
this Friday night, June 21, at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. The “Elite Lawn/All
Clear Modified 50”
highlights the program. Also competing Friday will be
Performance Concepts Late Models, Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen, Barron Motor
Supply Super Stocks, and Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars.
Friday’s
event is round 7 of the 17 event “ASA Papa John’s Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car
Championship.” Gates open at 6pm with practice starting at that time. Racing
begins at 7:30pm.
Larry
Clausen is the Miller Time Modified point leader going into Friday’s big race.
Clausen, who has won 2 of the six Modified features in 2003, has a 28 point
lead over runner-up Bob Gase. Brian Allen, Jim Williams, and rookie Shawn
Stinger round out the top 5.
Another
driver to watch is veteran Max Corporon, who is competing this year with a GM
Crate Engine. Corporon has first and second place finishes in the last two
weeks with the economical engine, which will be mandatory in the division in
2005.
Jim Ross
continues to lead the Performance Concepts Late Model standings. The veteran
Ross is 12 points ahead of Wisconsin’s Mike Ehde. Jeff King, Johnny Spaw, and
rookie JJ Meyer complete the top five.
2000
champ John Henecke has a slim 2 point lead over Andy Duggan in Budweiser Late
Model Sportsmen. Two time defending champ Curt Van Der Wal is third, only 16
points behind the leader. Kevin Korsmo, winner of two of the last three
features, and Johnny Mudd round out the top five.
Second
year driver Jim Hanson tops the Barron Motor Supply Super Stock points for the
third straight week. Hanson leads veteran Bob Ahrendsen by just 14 points.
Arnie Reif, Sonny Parker, and Scott Grady stand third, fourth, and fifth.
The
Special K Motorsports IMCA Stock Cars return after a two week absence. Doug
Simon, who has won both features for the new division at Hawkeye Downs, leads
Larry Silbaugh by 3 points. Ronnie Godwin, Tony Schimmels, and Cliff Gray round
out the top five.
