BRAD OSBORN CLAIMS FIRST HAWKEYE DOWNS LATE MODEL VICTORY
BOHNSACK SCORES WIN NUMBER FOUR IN SUPER STOCKS
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 06/14/02)—Rookie Hawkeye Downs Performance Concepts Late Model
driver Brad Osborn scored his first win Friday night outlasting some impressive
competition. Osborn, from Janesville, IA, got his first taste of the asphalt
last season during the IMCA Dirt late Model race, which he almost won. He led
most of that race before breaking a driveshaft with three laps remaining, which
gave Winston Cup driver Ken Schrader the eventual win. That experience led him
to acquire a car and race at Hawkeye Downs this season.
On this occasion, Osborn started outside the front
row and powered around Lorin Kurth on the opening circuit to take the lead.
Osborn was able to pull away a bit while the likes of Dudley Fleck, Jim Ross
and Johnny Spaw battled for second. He
continued to hold a comfortable margin until a caution bunched the field with
12 laps to go, putting Fleck, Ross, and Spaw on his bumper.
On the restart Osborn was able to pull away again
while Fleck, Spaw and Ross continue to battle for position. Spaw eventually
worked his way into second but there was too much ground to make up and not
enough laps left to made any headway. Ross finished third, Fleck fourth and
Randy Coghlan, fifth.
Kurt Bohnsack became the first driver in the 2002
season to lay claim to four first place trophies after scoring his fourth win
of the season in the Barron Motor Supply Super Stock feature. Despite the fact
that Bohnsack has now scored four wins the racing in the Super Stock division
remains very competitive with multiple lead changes and three-wide racing
throughout the pack. Bohnsack started
eighth and emerged from a three-wide battle to take the lead just past the
halfway mark of the 25-lap feature.
Doug Simon, who started in the fifth row, charged
through the pack to finish in second and was followed to the checkers by last
years’ season champion Brad Dvorak. Dvorak is a teammate of Bohnsack as well as
a teammate of fourth place finisher Bob Ahrendsen. Jeff Franks came from deep
in the pack to finish in fifth.
For awhile it looked like rookie Foreman Hydraulics
Legends driver Crystal Horn might score her first win in her first start at
Hawkeye Downs but Kyle Heinrichs had other ideas as he took the lead on lap 10
and was untouchable the rest of the way. Heinrichs nabbed his third win of the
season finishing ahead of Tom Frady, Kevin Foreman, Ross Zumbach, and Gene
Peterson. Horn, who has plenty of Go Kart experience at Hawkeye Downs tangled
with Chris Sevey d late in the race while battling for second which scrambled
the field with just a couple laps to go.
JJ Meyer posted his first win of 2002 in the
Budweiser Sportsmen feature leading the 25-lap affair from the drop of the
green after starting outside the first row. Tom Burke chased Meyer the entire
race to finish in second. Curt Van Der Wal, the 2001 Sportsmen champ, charged through the pack to finish in third
with Johnny Mudd fourth and Steve Kibort fifth. Meyer, has struggled a bit this
season trying to dial in a new car but seemed to find the handle on Friday
night.
The Miller Time Modified feature was almost like one
guy racing with himself and the rest of the field in a second race. Brian Allen
blasted into the lead and quickly left
the rest of the field behind building more than a full straightaway lead as the
laps ticked off. Mike Schulte worked though traffic to finish in second with
Trent Ross, Jim Williams and Keith Gogel rounding out the top of the order.
Racing continues Friday night with the HOSS Winged
Outlaw Sprint Cars joining the Budweiser Sportsmen, Barron Motor Supply Super
Stocks, and Foreman Hydraulics Legends.
