FLECK, CLAUSEN, WEBER POST HAWKEYE DOWNS HALF-MILE WINS

PFANTZ, PARROTT, DAINS PREVAIL IN QUARTER-MILE ACTION

(Cedar Rapids, IA 06/05/09)—The Papa Johns/I-Wireless Championship Cup point races are really beginning to take shape after the racing action on “Power of Nature Cub Cadet Night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.”

Fresh off his Miller Lite Late Model victory last week, Griffin McGrath set fast time in qualifying, turning a fast lap of 18.983 seconds for a lap speed of 95.188mph.

Brad Dvorak started on point for the forty-lap Late Model feature and after a couple restarts without a lap on the board he moved out to a 4 car-length lead over the rest of the field. Brad Osborn quickly closed the gap and took the lead on lap twelve.

After a lap sixteen restart, Dudley Fleck went to work on Osborn and made what would be the winning pass on lap twenty-four. He was never challenged the rest of the way, posting a winning margin of 3.218 seconds.  Osborn maintained second followed by Griffin McGrath.  Joey Gase recorded another strong finish in fourth with Brad Dvorak completing the top of the order in fifth.

Larry Clausen recorded his second straight win in Coors Light Modifieds with the win coming via a last-lap pass of Arlo Becker. Becker led virtually the entire race until Clausen mounted a final charge for the lead. Ryan Luedtke fnished third, Craig Bender was fourth, and defending champion Tim Plummer fifth.

The Budweiser Sportsmen feature saw action similar to last week with Michael Weber and Dave McCalla running side-by- side swapping the lead back and forth for most of the twenty-lap race. Andy Duggan ran third behind the pair looking for an opening for the lead himself.

Weber crossed the finish line just .089 seconds ahead of defending division champ McCalla with Andy Duggan, Travis Thompson and Dave Ballstaedt next in line.

The Budweiser Mid-Am Sportsmen and Coors Light Modifieds ran together as one feature due to some cars missing in the Sportsmen but the raced were scored separately and points will be awarded separately.

Gary Pfantz made his first visit to Coca-Cola Victory Lane this season in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks. The feature saw multiple cautions early but each time Pfantz, the polesitter  was able to hold off the pack on the restarts. With six laps remaining, Pfantz was finally able to put some distance between himself and most of the field although Scott Siems did mount a late charge and finished second. Positions three through five were a near photo-finish with Nathan Ballard squeezing out third, Jeff Franks fourth, and Shaun Myers was fifth.

The IMCA Northern Sportmod feature saw Tim Dains post his first win of the season. Creston Williams finished second behind Dains with Blake Carson,  and last weeks’ winner Scott kositzky next across the stripe.

Although Derek Parrott had a relatively easy time in winning the Sunline Hornets feature the action was hot and heavy through the pack. Three and four-wide racing was once against the rule. The fastest car on the track was clearly last weeks’ feature winner Brad Chandler who started in the rear and worked his way through the field to finish second. Brogan Fiala crossed the line in third followed by Jim Hanson and Nathan Chandler.

The Barron Motor Suppply IMCA Stock Cars had the week off.
