BOBBY EAST, TATE MARTZ WIN USAC EVENTS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS, BRAD OSBORN TOPS LATE MODELS AGAIN
(Cedar Rapids, IA 06/04/04)—A great field of USAC Sprint
Cars and USAC Ford Focus Midgets joined the three half-mile ASA Pap Johns Cup
I-Wireless divisions at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night. Advance Auto
Parts was the presenting sponsor for the program.
Bobby East
of Brownsburg, IN., won the caution free 40-lap Sprint car main event
after starting sixth in the 24-car feature. The Indiana teen took the point on lap 11 and finished well ahead
of Jay Drake and Michael Lewis, winning his first race of the season. Aaron
Pierce and Jason McCord completed the top five in the finishing order.
East was
also fast qualifier for the night with a time of 17.591 seconds- 102.325 mph.
27 Sprint cars went through the two-lap qualifying.
The Ford
Focus Midgets made just their second
appearance at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night, putting 17 cars in the
30-lap feature on the quarter-mile. Tate Martz of Rushville, IN., grabbed the checkers after taking the lead
on the first lap. Martz was the leader in a five car freight train which saw
Jordan Noblitt finish second while Dave Darland finished in third. Brad Lover
finished in fourth while Rex Norris III was fifth.
The win
was the third straight for Martz.
Brad
Osborn picked up yet another Performance Concepts Late Model feature, his third
win already this season. The Janesville driver took command just past the
halfway mark of the 20-lap feature and finished ahead of Dudley Fleck and Jeff
King. Chris Sevey posted another strong finish in finishing fourth. The fifth
place finisher was Jeff Waters of Mineral Point, WI, who has been a regular
competitor at Madison Int’l Speedway.
After
suffering some bad luck early in the season, Brian Allen of Hiawatha took top
honors in the Miller Time Modifieds. Allen won the 25-lap feature after
starting in the second row and finished ahead of Arlo Becker and Bob Gase.
Allen made the winning pass on lap six before cruising to the win. Finishing
behind the front three were Larry Clausen and Chad Willett.
The
Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen were also in action Friday night with Scott
Wennermark crossing the stripe first in the 25-lap feature. Bob Ahrendsen finished second with John
Henecke finishing third after starting deep in the field. Kevin Korsmo, driving
“the big orange truck,” finished in fourth followed by last year’s season champ, Johnny Mudd.
The race was halted twice due
to crashes including one that saw Robb Keeney back hard into the foam barriers
in turn four. The race winner was also involved in a mishap earlier in the race
but was able to drive away before eventually winning the race.
The regular Hawkeye Downs
divisions are off until June 18 but there’s plenty of action in store before
that. On Wednesday, June 9, the IMCA Dirt late Models take to the track for
their only pavement appearance of the year. 100.7 The Fox presents the IMCA
Late Models and Stock cars for action during the Hawkeye Downs Fair.
