FAIR OPENS FIVE DAY RUN THIS WEDNESDAY

 

(Cedar Rapids, IA  06/04/02)—The third annual “Hawkeye Downs Fair” open its five-day run this Wednesday, June 5, at Hawkeye Downs. The event is the first area fair of the summer, and was created in 2000 to replace the end of summer “All-Iowa Fair.”

 

            Fair admission will be free both Wednesday and Sunday, with tickets sold for Grandstand events. Fair admission is just $7 Adults Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with entertainment events free with fair admission.

 

            Wednesday, the 30th annual Miller 100 Late Model stock car race kicks off the Fair. Grandstand admission is $10 adults, Children 11 and under Free. Racing starts at 7:30 pm.

 

            Motorsports action will be held Thursday through Saturday in the newly remodeled AMA South Arena. The Arena offers better lighting, PA system, and increased seating.

 

            Thursday’s AMA South Arena event is the Sunline Demolition Derby. Start time is 7:30 pm. On Friday, the WMT Truck and Tractor Pull will be held, also with a 7:30 pm start. Saturday, the nation’s premier Tractor Pulling Series, the NTPA, comes to Hawkeye Downs for a Tractor and Semi-Truck Pull. Start time Saturday is 2pm.

 

            Two major music acts will perform at the Hawkeye Downs Fair. Saturday, 38 Special performs, with Large Midgets, the opening act. Grandstand gates open at 6:30 pm with Music at 7:30 pm.

 

            Sunday the annual KHAK Free Country Concert will be held for the second straight year at Hawkeye Downs. Tracy Byrd is the featured artist, with Black Diamond opening the show.

 

            Thomas Carnival will provide the rides and games. Unlimited Ride arm bands will be offered for $15 Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm- 11 pm and Sunday from 1pm-8pm.

 

            Other attractions appearing daily at the Fair include “The Great Cats of the World,” “Perry’s Exotic Petting Zoo,” “Pat Doyle Chain Saw Artist,” and “The Swing.”

 

            Fair hours are 4pm-midnight Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; Noon-1am Saturday, and Noon-10 pm Sunday.
