06/03/2011)—Racing action continued Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway as Cassill Motors-Your Friend in the Car Business- presented
action in the Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship
Series. All six Hawkeye Downs divisions were in action on a hot, steamy
summerlike evening.
The Innovative Signs
Promoters Choice Trophy Dash switched to the McGrath Powersports
INEX Legends Division this week with six drivers doing battle for six laps on
the quarter-mile. Troy Burkhart of Urbana earned a new piece of hardware for
the trophy case, beating Brogan Fiala to the stripe.

The first feature of
the evening saw Matt Petrzelka of Norway taking top
honors in the Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stock division. Jeremy Robbins led the
early going before Nathan Ballard and Petrzelka
started battling for the lead. Petrzelka appeared to
have a little better handling car and was able to keep the lead and secure the
wins as the final laps ticked off the Miller Lapboard. Ballard, the current
point leader, maintained second while Robbins was third.

Greg Hentrich lead
the early going in the Coca-Cola Sportsmen feature before Dave Ballstaedt and Ben Glascock joined in the fray. Glascock
ran the high line and powered into the lead on lap five and held the point
until lap twelve when Dave Ballstaedt pulled
alongside and the two battled and banged the remaining laps to the checkered
flag. Ballstaedt edged Glascock at the line by a
scant .032 seconds winning the very entertaining feature. Craig Stepanek
finished a strong third in his second outing of the season.

Rod McGlothlen of Oskaloosa piloted his #95 McGrath Powersports Legend to his second straight victory Friday
night, easily outdistancing Matt Blake. McGlothlen
bolted into the lead on the first lap and was untouchable the rest of the
30-lap feature. The win comes one week after he scored a feature win in a completely
different car. Finishing behind second-place Blake were Troy Burkhart, Brogan Fiala, and Brian Kamer.

Tim Plummer passed
race leader Ryan Luedtke at the halfway mark of the 20-lap Budweiser Modified
Feature to take his fourth win of the 2011 season. A lap five caution erased
the early lead that Luedtke had built and enabled Plummer to make what would be
the winning pass on lap ten. Luedtke dropped back a bit on the next lap
allowing the #88, driven by Johnny Spaw, to take
control of second., Spaw was
able to gain some ground on Plummer but still finished over a second behind the
leader as they crossed the stripe. Brian Gibson finished third, Luedtke was
fourth, and Jason Beauregard crossed in fifth. While Plummer currently holds a
sizable lead in the points he indicates he will miss some races this season due
to campaigning the #74 late model at other events.

The Sunline Hornets
Feature win was awarded to Dallas Chandler (No picture available) after the apparent winner
on the track, Kurt Bohnsack, failed post-race inspection. Chandler had led
earlier in the race but was passed by Bohnsack on lap seven. A couple cautions
later in the race kept the action close with recent winner Derek Parrott moving
into the picture in the closing laps. The revised finish order saw Parrott
finishing second followed by Brad Chandler and Nate Chandler. Dallas Chandler
is the fourth different winner in as many races in the division. He’s also the
third different Chandler to score a win this season.

Joey Gase picked up
his third win of the season in Performance Concepts Late Models but it
certainly wasn’t an easy one. Gase, Kyle Hinrichs, and
last weeks’ winner Brad Osborn ran over a full lap in a three-wide battle
before Gase appeared to back off a bit giving Osborn the point. Osborn built a
sizable lead at the halfway mark but Gase was still within striking distance as
the laps ticked off. With 10 laps remaining, Gase s once again on Osborn’s tail
and in fact took a brief lead with seven laps to go but it was erased when
caution reverted the order to the last lap.
Once racing resumed
the battle resumed as well with Gase wrestling the lead from Osborn with three
circuits remaining. Osborn tried a couple different lines in the last couple
laps but came up .196 seconds short at the stripe with Gase scoring the win. Andy
Edwards posted another strong run finishing in third while Tim Plummer was
fourth and Mason Mitchell fifth.
