JEFF FRANKS WINS “SUPER STOCK 70” AT
HAWKEYE DOWNS
(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA 060101)--
It was business as usual at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night after
storms passed to the north and south of the track and the ASA/Hawk Performance
Championship Series program started after a minimal delay. A healthy contingent
of fans braved a cool windy night and were rewarded with some great racing.
Jeff Franks took home the hardware in a special 70-lap
race for the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks after taking the lead with 25
laps to go. Roger Merta led from the drop of the green to that point and finished
third behind Brad Dvorak, who was coming on strong at the end of the race. Kurt
Bohnsack and Don Johnson filled out the top of the finishing order.
Jeff King was awarded the win in the “Powerade 50” for
Aggregates Late Models after the apparent on track winner, Dudley Fleck, didn’t
pass technical inspection. The win was King’s first of the season and he is the
fifth different driver to win a feature in the Late Models.
Greg Kastli finished second with Jim Ross, Curt Martin
and Keith Siefken filling out the top five.
Johnny Mudd started on the point in the Budweiser
Sportsmen feature and scored a flag-to-flag win edging out JJ Meyer. Mudd
survived several challenges from Scot Johnson, Dave Johnson and finally JJ
Meyer before collected the checkers.
Meyer finished a strong second while Dave Johnson, Scot Johnson and John
Henecke completed the rest of the first five finishing spots.
Brian Allen broke the streak of feature wins held by Mike
Schulte and Larry Clausen in winning the Miller Time Modified feature. Schulte was coming on strong as the laps
ticked off but couldn’t stage a serious challenge as the checkers waved. Arlo Becker finished third with Larry
Clausen and Bob Gase crossing the stripe in fourth and fifth.
BJ Goodin has a clean sweep going so far this season in
the A-1 Performance Marine Legends after picking up his third win in three
outings this season. Goodin took the lead from Tom Frady with ten laps to go
before notching his third win of the 2001 campaign. Frady finished in second
with Kevin Foreman, Warren Ropp and Keith Moline rounding out the top five.
