SPAW EDGES FLECK FOR HAWKEYE DOWNS LATE MODEL WIN
BOHNSACK, VAN DER WAL, SCHULTE AND SEVEY POST WINS ALSO
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 05/31/02)—The improved
weather and “KRNA $5 night” brought a huge crowd to Hawkeye Downs
Speedway
on Friday night for racing in the “ASA/Papa Johns Cup Championship Presented by
Iowa Wireless.” Cool, windy weather has been the norm for racing thus far this
season and the warmer temps on Friday night were welcomed by fans and racers
alike.
The Performance Concepts Late
Model feature saw Dudley Fleck charge into the lead from outside row one as the
field took the green, with Johnny Spaw immediately moving into second from his
starting spot inside row two. Fleck built a bit of an early lead on Spaw but
Spaw made steady progress in catching Fleck as the laps ticked off. Spaw was glued to Fleck’s bumper on a
restart with eight laps to go and made the winning pass entering the final lap
of the 30-lap feature.
Fleck finished second with TJ
Schaefer finishing third after starting in row four of the 24-car field.
Marty Diercks won the Tri-County
car Company Late Model Dash.
Kurt Bohnsack became the first
three-time winner of the 2002 campaign, picking up the win in the Barron Motor
Supply Super Stock feature. After an initial “no start” the 25 –lap feature
went green the rest of the distance with Bohnsack battling teammate and last
season’s champion Brad Dvorak for much of the race before securing the win.
Bohnsack and Dvorak both started
in row four and worked through the pack quickly to set up the duel for the
win. Cory Houdek, who started on the
pole, finished in third with an impressive showing with point leader Doug Simon
and Randy Filling also posting top five finishes.
Curt Van Der Wal notched his
second win of the season in the Budweiser Sportsmen feature posting a strong
flag-to-flag effort in the 25-lap race. Van Der Wal, last year’s season
champion, earned the pole after winning his heat and was untouchable from the
drop of the green. Andy Duggan recorded
a strong performance in finishing second while Johnny Mudd finished third for
the third time this season. The point leader coming into Friday night, Brian
Franks, finished in fifth.
Mike Schulte picked up his first
win of the season Friday night in the Miller Time Modified division. Schulte gained the point for the feature by
winning his feature and won the 25 lapper handily although second place
finisher Larry Clausen did eat into the lead in the closing laps. Clausen
started in row four which gave Schulte time to build a substantial lead while
Clausen worked through traffic.
Jim Williams had another strong
showing in finishing third. He was followed to the stripe by Dave Novotny and
Trent Ross. Novotny’s fourth place finish was his nest of the season to date.
Chris Sevey totally dominated
the Foreman Hydraulics feature from start to finish and in fact lapped the
field up to the fourth place finisher Tom Frady before collected the
checkers. In past weeks Sevey has built
a seemingly insurmountable lead only to have Kyle Heinrichs chase him down for
the win. Heinrichs finished second with
Kevin Foreman coming in third. Heinrichs hold a narrow lead over Foreman in the
points battle. Frady finished in fourth with Gene Peterson in fifth.
Racing resumes Wednesday, June 5
with the running of the 30th annual Miller 100 on the opening night
of the 2002 Hawkeye Downs Fair. The Performance Concepts will run a 100-lap
feature with the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks, Miller Time Modifieds, and
Foreman Hydraulics Legends also on the card for a 7:30 pm start.
