DULIN, CHANDLER, KOSITZKY HIGHTLIGHT HAWKEYE DOWNS QUARTER-MILE ACTION ON ‘VAN METER INDUSTRIAL FAST LANE FRIDAY’
(Cedar Rapids, IA 05/29/09)- A huge crowd was treated to some great racing action along with some thrills and spills Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Van Meter Industrial presented racing in seven divisions as part of their “Fast Lane Friday” promotion in support of local flood relief.
Race fans were asked to donate $1.00 for flood relief as admission to the races and Van Meter matched donations as well. Van Meter also provided a post race party at Hawkeye Downs Tavern on the Mall.
2008 NASCAR Rookie of the Year Landon Cassill was also on hand running with the Miller Lite Late Models and also offered an autographed poster to be raffled with the proceeds added to Van Meter’s flood relief efforts.
Dudley Fleck of Cedar Rapids set the mark in Miller Lite Late Models during qualifying, recording a time of 18.873 seconds for a lap of 95.374 MPH.
Jim Ross set the pace early in the forty-lap Late Model feature but Landon Cassill quickly moved to the front from his fifth starting spot and took the point on lap 10. Dudley Fleck found himself on Cassill’s rear bumper as the laps ticked off even as a couple cautions re-bunched the field.
CASSILL AND FLECK TANGLE IN THE LATE MODEL FEATURE
Then, with just seven laps remaining, Cassill and Fleck spun in turn four as the two battled for the lead bringing out the caution, sending the pair to the back, and placing eventual race winner Griffin McGrath in command for the restart. McGrath charged to the checkers, crossing the stripe 1.3 seconds ahead of Johnny Spaw. Joey Gase finished a very strong third with Logan Hale fourth. Fleck rallied from the restart and finished fifth.

In other Papa Johns/I-Wireless Championship Cup action on the half-mile, Dave McCalla found himself in Coca-Cola Victory Lane once again but getting there wasn’t easy. McCalla watched much of the race from behind Andy Duggan and Michael Weber as that pair battled side-by-side for over half the race. With just two laps remaining, Duggan and Weber touched and spun bringing out the yellow flag.
As the race restarted McCalla took command for the final two laps with Weber coming back for second, Duggan third, Bob Ahrendsen Fourth and Travis Thompson fifth.
The Coors Light Modified Feature was a flag-to flag run for Larry Clausen although defending champion Tim Plummer closed rapidly as the final laps ticked off. Clausen crossed the stripe .429 seconds ahead of Plummer for the win with Ryan Luedtke finishing third. Arlo Becker finished fourth and Craig Bender recorded another top five run as well.
Moving to the quarter-mile, the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars put on another great show even with multiple cautions during their 25-lap feature. Chad Siems and Kurt Bohnsack led laps in the first half of the race before last weeks’ winner, Scooter Dulin, took over 10 laps to go. Dulin prevailed through a couple late cautions and beat Bohnsack to the checkered flag with Brian Franks, mark Bolton, and Greg Hentrich finishing in the top five as well.
The Sunline Hornets feature was another wild affair with the now customary three and four wide racing in evidence once again. Jeff Selfridge led the first half of the feature from the pole. Brad Chandler powered into the lead from his eighth starting spot just past the crossed flags for halfway, survived a restart with six laps remaining and prevailed for the win. Last weeks winner, Jim Hanson, finished third followed by Shane Hanson and Brad Burhite.
After a shaky heat race, Scott Kositzky rallied for a win in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature after starting outside row three. Tim Dains led all but the last turn of the last lap as Kositzky took the lead in turn four on the checkered flag lap. Dains held on to second with Creston Williams third, Ken Kositzky fourth, and Blake Carson fifth.
The Two-Person cruisers were also on hand Friday night. They are running a limited schedule at Hawkeye Downs during the 2009 season in sufficient interest is maintained. The team of Rob Miller/Mike McDonald lead nearly all of the race before a caution with a couple laps remaining halted the action. Officials elected to run the field in the opposite direction for the remaining two laps and Mike Kimm/Nick King found that to their liking as they took the lead exiting turn three on the final lap and collected the checkers. Miller/McDonald finished second while Quitin Embry/MattPetrazelka were third and Jaons Staout/Justin Wacha finished fourth.
