KORSMO CONTINUES HAWKEYE DOWNS
HOT STREAK AS PLUMMER WINS THIRD, McCALLA WINS FIRST
(Cedar Rapids,
IA 05/28/05)— Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen
driver and points leader Kevin Korsmo of Atkins picked up his 5th win
of the season Friday night in the first of two 20-lap features for that
division on Friday night. Korsmo started on the inside of row four and quickly
moved through the rest of the field to take command of the race. Last years champion, Scott Wennermark of Ely,
who is primarily running in the Late Model division, finished second, about 1.5
seconds behind Korsmo. Craig Bender of
Cedar Rapids posted another strong performance, finishing third.
Rookie
Dave McCalla won the second Sportsmen feature finishing nearly six seconds
ahead of Kevin Franks of Central City according to Alliant Energy Electronic
Timing and Scoring. McCalla of Cedar Rapids, who moved up to Sportsmen this season,
already had built up a sizeable lead by the halfway mark and continued padding
the lead as the laps ticked off. The win was the first of the season for
McCalla. Kevin Franks crossed the Lint
Millwright Start-Finish Line in third followed by Brian Franks and Kevin
Korsmo.
In
other action in the Papa John’s Cup/I-Wireless Championship, Tim Plummer, Norway, notched
win number three in the 30-lap Miller Time IMCA Asphalt Modified feature. Pat
Flannagan of Cedar Rapids
built an early lead but saw it erased by a pair of Yellowbook yellow flags
allowing the field to stay close. Flannagan and Arlo Becker of Norway waged a
side-by-side battle for several laps allowing the rest of the pack to close in
even tighter. Plummer and Bob Gase
joined the fray with Plummer using a nifty move to secure the lead on lap 17.
Plummer
was able to pull away as Becker and Gase continued to battle for second. Becker
spun with 8 laps to go giving Gase second and a shot to catch Plummer. However
Gase couldn’t overcome the deficit in the remaining laps and finished
seven-tenths of a second behind Plummer. Rodney Rocarek of Mt. Vernon
finished an impressive third followed to the stripe by Larry Clausen of Cedar Rapids and
Flannagan.
In
racing in the Full Throttle Energy Drink Stars of Tomorrow chase, Brad Dvorak
of Cedar Rapids padded his points lead in the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock
Car division by winning his third feature of the season. Randy Filling of
Toddville took control early but surrendered the lead to Chad Siems of Mt. Auburn
on the sixth circuit. Dvorak initiated a challenge for the lead a couple laps
later and took command at the halfway mark of the 25-lap event. A caution bunched the field with seven laps
remaining but Dvorak pulled away once again earning the trip to Coca-Cola Victory Lane. Siems maintained second with Filling
third. Cory Houdek of CR finished in
fourth and Doug Simon of Marion
was fifth.
Terry
Shaffar continued to dominate the Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stocks picking
up his third straight win since a couple DNF’s earlier in the season. While
Shaffar, of State
Center, has dominated the
past three weeks he started the season on a shaky note after blowing motors the
first couple weeks giving him a sizable amount of points to make up if he is to
contend for the points title. Shaffar’s
engine was claimed after the race and was sold according to IMCA procedures.
Ron
Dighton of Cedar Rapids finished second, Roland Bohnsack of Clutier was third,
Rodney Grother of CR fourth, and Tim Dains of CR was fifth.
The
Marines.com Hornets division continues to grow and another newcomer found the
quarter-mile to his liking Friday night. Jake Blumer of Manchester collected the checkers in the
12-lap Hornets feature, finishing ahead of another newcomer, Joe Jaster of
Elkader. Nathan Ballard of Marengo finished third followed by Connie Binder of
Clutier. Fifth place went to Rick Gallo of Cedar Rapids.
Racing
continues Friday night June 3rd with all six divisions in action
along with the USCA Ford Focus Midgets.
