NO REPEAT
WINNERS IN TWIN FEATURES AT HAWKYE DOWNS
(Cedar Rapids, IA 051501)—The
hearty souls braving the cold and damp weather were treated to some great
racing at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night as Hawk Performance and
KHAK-FM presented twin features.
The first feature in each of the
ASA Member Track/Hawk Performance Championship Series divisions was lined up by
season point average, with the top 12 in points inverted and the rest of the
field arranged by points behind the top 12.
The second feature in each division
was based on the finishing order from the first feature. The top 12 finishers
were inverted with the rest of the field falling in behind based on their
finish in the first feature. The Super
Stocks followed a slightly different format with the field just split into two
features based on points.
Brad Dvorak won the first Barron
Motor Supply Super Stock feature after starting well back in the field. Dvorak
snagged the lead from Aric Becker just past the halfway mark of the 25 lapper
and motored to an easy win.
Brian Franks, who’s been subbing
for Brenda Harrington, took home the hardware in the second Super Stock Feature
out-dueling Kurt Bohnsack for the lead in the early laps and cruising to the
win. Bohnsack maintained second while Mike Brecht finished in third.
Josh Walker disposed of TJ
Schaefer on the third lap of feature number one in the Aggregates Late Models
and went unchallenged the rest of the way to collect the win. Schaefer held on to the number two slot with
Wade Prasil finishing third.
Curt Martin saw a healthy lead
erased by the caution flag in the first second Late Model feature and that was
all Justin Diercks needed to snag the lead. Diercks had to survive a couple
caution flags and restarts himself before finally earning the win. Martin
finished in second with Jeff King crossing the stripe in third.
Scot Johnson took a flag-to-flag
win in the first Budweiser Sportsmen feature but not without some heavy
pressure from JJ Meyer. Meyer had to settle for second with the other half of
the Johnson family, Scot’s father Dave Johnson finishing in third.
The second Sportsmen feature
looked to be Craig Bender’s for the taking until a yellow wiped out a huge lead.
Bender’s mount apparently faltered on the restart, which allowed Curt Van Der
Wal and Martin Ballard to rocket by. Van Der Wal took his third win of the
season with Ballard finishing in second. Tom Burke was third.
Larry Clausen scored his second
feature win of the season by winning the first Miller Time Modified feature.
Clausen battled with Trent Ross before taking the lead with seven laps
remaining. Mike Schulte rallied to finish second while Ross held on to third.
The second Open Wheel Modified feature went to Mike Schulte making it his fourth trip to victory lane this season. Schulte took the point from Keith Gogel with ten laps remaining and took the win despite a number of caution flags and some wild three-wide racing through the pack. Arlo Becker finished second with Gogel in third.
