(Cedar
Rapids, IA 05/24/02)—Up until Friday
night there had been no repeat feature winners in the ASA Racing/Papa Johns Cup
presented by Iowa Wireless at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
All that changed Friday night as
Kurt Bohnsack, Arlo Becker, and Kyle Hinrichs scored feature wins for the
second time this season on Labor Union night at Hawkeye Downs.
Bohnsack emerged victorious in the
Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks 25-lap
feature after starting outside row one and chasing polesitter Derrick Griesehop
for much of the event. Bohnsack, part of the 3-car Special K Motorsports team,
used lapped traffic to his advantage on the final lap as he squeezed between
Griesehop and a slower car to take the checkers. Randy Filling finished second,
while Doug Simon, Jayson Scott and Bob Ahrendsen rounded out the top five.
Arlo Becker, “the ageless wonder,”
landed in Coca-Cola Victory Lane for the second time this season after holding
off Mike Schulte in the 25-lap Miller Time Modified feature. Becker started up
front and built a substantial lead before Schulte was able to pick his way
through from the seventh starting slot.
Schulte was able to catch Becker on
the final lap but wasn’t close enough for a serious challenge and settled for
second. Keith Gogel finished third after starting alongside Becker. Trent Ross
and Brian Allen finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Kyle Hinrichs of Swisher has started
a streak in the Foreman Hydraulics Legends, winning the last two features in
that division. Once again Chris Sevey bolted to a big lead but Hinrichs
steadily ate into Sevey’s lead as the laps ticked off. With five laps to go,
Hinrichs was challenging for the lead and one lap later he took command
although Sevey did fight back but couldn’t regain the position. Tom Frady,
Kevin Foreman and Eric Appleget finished out the top of the running order.
Kevin Lee held off Brian Franks to
score his first feature win of the 2002 campaign in the Budweiser Sportsmen.
Lee started up front and rocketed into a big lead but saw that evaporate as
caution waved with 7 laps down. Lee maintained his lead on the restart and held
off Franks as the laps ticked off and had his hands full in the final laps as
the handle seemed to go away a bit on Lee’s car. Finishing behind Franks were
Johnny Mudd, Craig Bender and last seasons’ champion Curt Van Der Wal.
Steve Carlson made his first Hawkeye
Downs victory lane celebration of 2002 on Friday night after taking the lead
from Marty Diercks with just seven laps to go in the Performance Concepts Late
Model feature. Carlson, who was shaking down a new motor, started tenth and
used both high and low moves to move toward the front before nabbing the lead
from Diercks. Jeff King slipped around Diercks on the final lap to finish in
second. Marty Diercks was third, followed by nephew Justin Diercks. Brian
Gibson celebrated his birthday by finishing fifth.
Randy Coghlan posted the win in the
Tri-County Car Company Dash for Late Models.
All five divisions of the ASA
Racing/Papa Johns Cup presented by Iowa Wireless return to action on May 31
when KRNA Radio presents “$5 night.”
