AHRENDSEN, ALLEN, DVORAK AND HINRICHS VISIT VICTORY LANE ALSO
By
Brad Grupe
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 051002)—Brian Gibson
probably has seen enough of the caution flag and fellow competitor Dudley Fleck
for a while. Gibson was able to hold off Fleck for the win in the 50-lap
“Performance Concepts 50” at Hawkeye Downs on Friday night but he did have to
repel repeated challenges from Fleck. After each caution Fleck would pull
alongside but never could complete the move and after a few laps under green
Gibson would increase his lead.
Fleck finished in second
followed by Wade Prasil, Doug Hite, TJ Schaefer and Mike Ehde.
The race was taped for broadcast
on Fox 28/40 television and on Mediacom Cable as part of the Smirnoff Ice TV
Racing Series.
Young Kyle Hinrichs of Swisher
made his first visit to Coca-Cola Victory Lane after winning the 25-lap Foreman
Hydraulics Legends Feature. Hinrichs grabbed the point from Chris Sevey after
chasing him down with just two laps to go and then held off Sevey as the two
encountered lapped traffic on the last lap. Kevin Foreman finished third, Eric
Appleget fourth and newcomer Bryan Cataldi finishing fifth.
Defending Barron Motor Supply
Super Stock champion Brad Dvorak returned to his winning ways Friday night
after chasing Derrick Griesehop for the first half of the race. Dvorak made an
outside pass for the lead and then held off a challenge from teammate Bob
Ahrendsen before settling into the top slot for good. Dvorak’s win came on the
eve of his graduation from Iowa State University. Doug Simon finished a strong second after starting deep in the
pack. The rest of the top five were Bob
Ahrendsen, Jayson Scott and Kevin Franks.
The Miller Time Modified feature
was a race of “almosts” and “what if’s” for a couple familiar faces. Arlo
Becker, who’s already visited victory lane once this season, bolted into a big
early lead but it was short-lived as Bob Gase emerged the leader after a three
wide drag race with Becker and Mike Schulte down the back chute. A few laps
later Becker lost an engine, which brought out the caution.
On the restart Schulte gained
the lead from Gase but shortly after Schulte began experiencing problems with a
faulty ignition and Brian Allen found himself in command and the eventual
winner. Gase finished second followed to the stripe by Larry Clausen Trent Ross
and Jim Williams.
Bob Ahrendsen posted a
wire-to-wire win in the Budweiser Sportsmen feature. He jumped into the lead
from outside the front row and built a commanding lead. Most of the action was
behind him as a battle ensued for positions two-five for the balance of the
race. Steve Kibort, Martin Ballard, Craig Bender, Johnny Mudd and John Henecke
were all players in that battle but when the final lapped ticked off Bender
finished second, Mudd third, Henecke fourth, and Ballard fifth.
The
ASA Racing/Papa Johns Championship Series takes a break on May 17 as the ASA
Racing Series invades Hawkeye Downs May 18-19 for the nationally televised “O’Reilly Auto Parts 300.”
