Several cars did not pass technical inspection after
Friday, May 9 Racing at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. They were all disqualified from
their feature finish, and will receive show-up points and pay only. They will
start at the back of a heat race at the next event, May 30.
The cars disqualified and reason were:
#1 Late Model- Carburetor
Spacer
#14 Late Model- Carburetor
Spacer
#25 Late Model- Carburetor
Spacer
#72 Late Model- Carburetor did
not pass inspection
# 15 Modified- Carburetor
Spacer
#16 Late Model- Carburetor Spacer
#3 Super Stock- Carburetor

SPAW PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF 2003, IMCA STOCK CARS
RETURN TO HAWKEYE DOWNS
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 5/9/2003)—The IMCA Stock Cars made their first appearance at Hawkeye
Downs since 1991 on Friday night with 14 drivers signed in. The pavement sanction
is a first for IMCA, a Vinton, IA based sanctioning body. The division runs on
62 tracks across the country, including Hawkeye Downs.
Special K Motorsports is sponsoring
the 11 appearances that the IMCA Stock cars will make at Hawkeye Downs Speedway
this season as part of the ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car
Championships.
Veteran Hawkeye Downs driver Doug
Simon took the visiting drivers to task and won the 12-lap feature handily but
there were some great battles through the field in the closing laps. Simon,
crossed the stripe ahead of 2002 IMCA Super Nationals Stock Car Champion Larry Silbaugh of Jefferson, IA. Ronnie
Godwin of Earlham was third.
The Performance Concepts Late Models
ran their first extra distance race of the season on Friday night with
defending track champion taking home the hardware. Spaw started in row four and
wasted little time working his way to the front, taking the leap on lap 28.
The best battle on the track was
between veteran dirt driver-now Hawkeye Downs rookie- Denny Osborn and Dudley
Fleck as Fleck tried to wrestle second spot from Osborn. Osborn gave Fleck the
outside groove but he wasn’t able to complete the pass despite several tries.
Fleck settled for third with Matt Lundberg fourth and Mike Ehde finishing in
fifth.
Brian Helle chalked up the win in
the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks after winning a heat race earlier. Helle
led all thirty laps but not without a couple challenges from Aric Becker in the
closing laps. Becker settled for second with Arnie Reif, David McCalla, and Jim
Hanson finishing out the top of the order, according to Alliant Energy Timing
and Scoring.
Larry Clausen picked up his second
win of the young season with relative ease in the Miller Time Modifieds.
Despite a couple cautions Clausen was able to outdistance the field and finish
safely ahead of Jim Williams and rookie Kyle Hinrichs. Bob Gase finished in
fourth while rookie Shawn Stinger crossed the scoring line in fifth.
After a one-year retirement Kevin
Korsmo returned to the ranks of the Budweiser Sportsmen this season and Friday
night he proved he hasn’t lost his touch as he powered his car into the lead on
lap thirteen after starting in the third row. Korsmo started outside row three
and kept his car in the outside groove as he worked into the lead. Finishing
behind Korsmo were defending champion Curtis Van De Wal, Brian Franks, John
Henecke, and Martin Ballard.
Also on the card Friday night were
the Duffy’s Collectible Cars Legends. Tom Frady of Cedar Rapids notched the win
over Crystal Horn and Brett Thomas. A
last lap incident sent frontrunners Eric Appleget and Landon Cassill to the
back of the finishing order. Keith Meyer and Mark Hauder were the balance of
the top five.
The regular Hawkeye Downs divisions
are off the next two week as USAC Sprints and Midgets visit on May 16 and the
ASA racing Series visits on the next weekend.
