(Cedar
Rapids, IA 05/04/02)—After a two- week hiatus caused by cool, rainy weather “Short
Track Saturday Night” roared back to life Saturday night at Hawkeye Downs
Speedway.
The Saturday series promoted by
CRD Promotions features the Lacey Plumbing Outlaw Super Stocks, Rock Solid
Chassis Modifieds, Automotive Fuel Systems Stock Cars, Barron Motor Supply 2
Driver Cruisers, Wholly Smokes Women On Wheels, and Vintage Coupes. The latter
are members of the Eastern Iowa Vintage Racing Association, which is based in
Mt. Vernon.
Dave Coghlan of Marion posted
his second win in as many starts in the Modified feature. Coghlan started in
row two and used the high side to motor into the lead with six laps to go. Bob
Hodges finished in second with Dustin Lacey crossing the stripe in third.
Another repeat winner was Doug
Simon in the Outlaw Super Stocks. Simon blasted through the pack to take the
lead and was untouchable for the balance of the 15-lap event. Scott Grady appeared to gain a bit on Simon
in the closing laps but settled for second, followed by John Baker,
Deb Mefford found the outside
groove to her liking and disposed of the rest of the field in taking the win in
the 12 lap Women On Wheels feature. Polesitter
Shellie Obrien-Perry finished in second with the other half of the front
row Dana Scott, finishing third.
The Vintage Coupes run a format
that has multiple winners within the main event based on the number of
cylinders the car has. The Nostalgia Stock Car division joined the coupes for
Saturday night’s event. Jamie Huff of Center Point of Center Point won the
Stock car event followed by Torrey Roster of Garrison. Brian Halstead of Vinton was third in that
division. Jeff Selfridge of Marion took
top honors in the V-8 division scoring a convincing win over Dan Haack of
Bettendorf. Jim Kippling of Dike was
third. Gaylord Bowers of Tipton was the
lone six-cylinder contender starting the feature and took home the hardware for that division.
The team of Jerry Obrien/Shellie
Obrien-Perry took the checkers in the 2-Driver Cruisers after starting outside
row one. The car piloted by Matt Poduska/Brian Dvorak crossed the stripe in
second, coming form inside the third row. Steve Luedtke/Mike Carver finished
third.
Dave McCalla nearly lapped the
entire field in the Stock Car feature driving a car usually driven by Ron
Dighton. McCalla started outside row three and quickly moved to the lead. By
the half-way mark of the 25 lap feature McCalla had a half-lap lead on the rest
of the field and was moving quickly through lapped traffic. McCalla’s closest
pursuer was Chad Vozenilek with John
McDaniel in third.
Kevin Korsmo, subbing for Mike Walsh, won the Stock
Car B Feature.
Racing continues for Short Track
Saturday Night on May 11th with the regular divisions in action on
Chappy’s Safari Lounge night.
