HITE BREAKS CARLSON’S STREAK AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

Clausen, Johnson, Franks Among Other Winners

By Brad Grupe

(Cedar Rapids, IA 050401) Late Model driver Steve Carlson has been nearly unstoppable in his last several appearances at Hawkeye Downs Speedway, dating back to last season. Friday night that changed, as Doug Hite was able to hold off the charges of Carlson during the last ten laps of the “Powerade 50.” A field of 29 cars was on hand Friday night, which may be a record for a regular Friday night program.

Hite chased leader TJ Schaefer, who dominated the race for 40 laps, before Schaefer spun, tagging the soft wall in turn one. A slower car just ahead of then leader Schaefer lost a rear end and Schaefer slid in fluid from the car, collecting the wall in his Dodge Intrepid.

Hite fought off a challenge from Carlson with a couple laps to go and then used a lapped car to seal the deal in taking the win in the ASA Sanctioned Late Model division. Greg Kastli posted a strong performance finishing third while Wade Prasil finished fourth. Dave Naylor finished in the fifth slot in his second week back in action.

Jeff Franks made a three wide pass on the third lap of the Barron Motor Supply Super Stock Feature. This was opening night for the Super Stocks and their first chance to accumulate points in the Hawk Performance Championship Series.

Franks maintained his lead to the checkers despite a near three-wide finish with Derrick Griesehop and Don Johnson both making a bid for the point on the final lap. Griesehop finished second, Johnson third, Jeremy Crimmins fourth, and Bob Ahrendsen finished fifth.

Larry Clausen recorded his first feature win in about three years in the Miller Time Modified division. Clausen started eighth in the 25-lap feature and took the lead on the fifth lap around the ‘Downs half-mile. The best battle was for second in the closing laps as Mike Schulte, Scott Wennermark and Bob Gase fought for the spot.

Schulte held onto second with Wennermark third, Gase fourth and Jim Williams fifth.

Dave Johnson won a crash marred Budweiser Sportsmen feature after taking the lead from Tom Burke with just a couple laps to go. Johnson had challenged for the point earlier before a caution with eight laps remaining negated the move.

Burke finished in second with JJ Meyer notching third. Andy Duggan ran a strong race, finishing in fourth while Martin Ballard crossed the stripe in fifth.

A pair of make-up features from April 20 were run for the Barron Motor Supply Thunderstocks and the Coke Women on Wheels. Ron Dighton took an early lead in the Thunderstock feature finishing ahead of Jeff Selfridge and Crystal Griesehop.

Gwen Christensen scored a win in the Coke Women On Wheels feature after taking the lead from Wendy Carnahan with less than five laps remaining. Carnahan maintained second while Deb Mefford finished in third.
