USAC WINNERS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS FRIDAY
(Cedar Rapids, IA 04/29/02)—The last three USAC race winners, and three of the dour Cedar Rapids USAC Sprint Car race winners, are entered in this Friday night’s “Advance Auto Parts Open Wheel Classic” at Hawkeye Downs. The event, featuring both USAC Sprint Cars and Midget Cars, is the biggest pavement open wheel event in Iowa Motorsports history. It will be taped by ESPN2 for broadcast Thursday night, May 16.
The last two USAC Sprint Car winners and the most recent USAC Midget Car winner will be in action at Hawkeye Downs Friday. David Steele, who also won last September’s USAC Sprint Car race at Hawkeye Downs, won at Winchester, IN Speedway last Sunday. Tracy Hines, who holds the Hawkeye Downs USAC Sprint Car and Midget Car track records, won at Nazareth, PA Sunday, April 19.
Also a winner at Nazareth, in USAC Midget Cars, was Michael Lewis. He will be in action at Hawkeye Downs Friday, driving a car sponsored by A.J. Foyt.
Other previous Hawkeye Downs winners in action Friday will be 1999 USAC Sprint winner Jason McCord and 2000 Sprint winner Dave Darland.
Joining the USAC Sprint Cars and Midget Cars on the program will be the Hawkeye Downs’ Budweiser Sportsmen and Miller Time Modifieds. Racing starts at 7:30pm.
Race fans
are also invited to Hawkeye Downs on Thursday night. An open USAC Sprint car
and Midget car practice will be held from 5pm-8pm. Grandstand admission is free
Thursday, and fans will be invited into the infield pit area after practice for
autographs and to meet the drivers.
