RYAN AND PRIETZEL
TAKES MID-AMERICAN SERIES WINS AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
GRIESEHOP TOPS IN SUPER STOCKS, ROSS KURTH VICTORIOUS IN
LATE MODELS
(Cedar
Rapids, IA 042602)—The Planet Pages
Mid-American Stock Cars and Super Trucks invaded Hawkeye Downs Friday night
with the Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks and Performance Concepts Late Models also
on the card. Those were the only two divisions in competition in the Papa Johns
Championship Cup presented by Iowa Wireless.
Jake Ryan of Lakeville, MN proved he may be a force
to be reckoned with in the Planet Pages Mid-American Stock Car Series this
season. Ryan showed up at Hawkeye Downs Speedway minutes before the start of
qualifying with a brand new 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo, got just three practice
laps, and then won the 30-lap feature after starting in row six.
Ryan, who runs in the Sportsman
Division at Elko Speedway is a rookie in the Mid-AM Stock Car Series but has
run against many of the series regulars in the past.
Bill Prietzel, Franklin, WI set
fast time in qualifying turning the Hawkeye Downs half-mile in 20.010 seconds.
Heat wins went to George Schultz of Park City, IL; Brian Franks pf Central
City, IA and Kevin Lee of Cedar Rapids, IA. Seventeen cars advanced to the
feature from time trials with 3 additional spots filled from the last chance
race, which was won by George Schultz.
Peter Hernandez of Mokena, IL
dominated the early going in the feature and built a seemingly insurmountable
lead but at the halfway point Ryan was in the picture running in fourth behind
Jeremy Spoonmore and regular Hawkeye Downs competitor Kevin Lee. Three laps
later Ryan had slipped around Spoonmore and Lee and set his sights on
Hernandez.
Ryan slowly reeled in Hernandez
as the final laps ticked off and using lapped traffic to his advantage he made
the winning pass with just four laps remaining. Hernandez fought back on the
outside but couldn’t regain the lead before the checkers waved. Hernandez finished in second with Lee third,
Rod Brewe fourth and Dennis Krumrie fifth.
A
notable entry in this race was 70-year-old Herb Shannon. Shannon ran his first
race at Hawkeye Downs in 1953, when it was a dirt track and ran his first
asphalt race in 1983 at the famed Milwaukee Mile.
Bill
Prietzel, Franklin, WI captured the 30-lap Planet Pages Mid-American Super
Truck Series Feature at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night. The veteran
driver, who also drives a Mid-American Stock car, started in the last row of the
13-truck feature and worked his
way through the pack running in third with ten laps to go.
Just two laps later, the trucks of Donnie Woller of
Merrill, WI and Gary Fredrickson of Northfiled, MN got together on the
backstretch while battling for the lead. The truck of Woller flipped on it’s
top as the two touched and slid upside down in a shower of sparks before
collecting the soft walls in turn three. Neither driver was injured from the
crash which ended a side-by-side battle for the lead that had lasted for
several laps.
When racing resumed Prietzel, who avoided the crash,
assumed the lead and finished just ahead of Art Christoffersen of Toddville,
IA. Christoffersen is a regular competitor in the Super truck Series as well as
a Late Model driver in the weekly program at hawkeye Downs.
Anthony Holm of Prior Lake, MN finished a strong third after starting
outside row one with Michael Schmitz, Northfield, MN, and Andy Jirik of Lonsdal, MN rounding out the top of the
finishing order.
Jerry Seibel of
Campbellsport, WI set an unofficial track record for a Mid-Am Super
Truck in qualifying turning the half-mile in 20.071 seconds.
A special Super Truck vs.
Stock Car “Rumble” was also on the card with the top seven finishers from the
Super Truck series pitted against the top seven from the Stock Car feature.
Rod
Brewe, in a Stock Car, took the lead at the mid-point of that 25-lap feature and held off a fast-charging
Jake Ryan, also in a Stock Car, for the
win. Paul Nesius was the highest
finishing Super Truck and was followed to the stripe by Andy Jirik, also in a
truck.
The
Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks continue to put on a fantastic show on the
Hawkeye Downs quarter-mile and Friday night was certainly no exception.
Derrick
Griesehop won the 25-lap feature, leading from start-to-finish, but getting to
victory lane wasn’t as easy as that.
Griesehop spent much of the race fending off Chad Siems and Doug Simon
before finally collecting the win. A late caution gave Siems and Simon one more
crack at the leader but they ended up dueling to the end for second.
Siems
finished second with Simon third, Jayson Scott fourth and Randy Filling fifth.
The
Performance Concepts Late Models had some troubles with the caution flag again
Friday night but when the checkers finally flew Ross Kurth of Waterville found
himself in victory lane after just his third race in a Late Model. Kurth
battled his uncle Lorin Kurth in the early laps and eventually the two Kurth
family members swapped positions.
With
11 laps to go Lorin Kurth still held the point but Justin Diercks and Johnny
Spaw were rapidly moving up, making it
a four car affair. Two caution flags later
Ross Kurth was back in the lead with Doug Hite in hot pursuit. Hite finished
second to Kurth with Brian Gibson third, Matt Lundberg fourth, and Curt Martin
fifth.
Johnny
Spaw won the Tri-County Car Company Late Model Dash.
