SEASON OPENERS THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

AT HAWKEYE DOWNS

 

(Cedar Rapids, IA 4/23/03)—Hawkeye Downs opens it 2003 season this weekend with racing Friday and Saturday nights.

 

          Friday night, it’s the opening round of the “ASA Papa Johns Cup Iowa Wireless Stock Car Championship.” Saturday, the opening night for “tobacco Outlet Plus Short Track Saturday Night” will be presented. Racing starts at 7:30pm both evenings.

 

          Friday racing begins its third year as part pf the “ASA Member Track” program. Four ASA (American Speed Association) sanctioned divisions compete weekly. Performance Concepts Late Models, Miller Time Modifieds, Budweiser Late Model Sportsmen, and Barron Motor Supply Super Stocks will be in action 16 Friday’s and 1 Wednesday this season.

 

          This Friday’s event also includes the first of 10 races for Duffy’s Collectible Cars Legends.

 

          Eighty-seven car/driver combinations are entered in the four ASA sanctioned divisions. The entry list includes 22 Late Models, 17 Modifieds, 19 Late Model Sportsmen, and 29 Super Stocks.

 

          Three of the five “2002 Papa Johns Cup Champions” are returning this year. Late Model champion Johnny Spaw and Late Model Sportsmen champion Curt Van Der Wal will be back to defend their titles. Legends champion Kyle Hinrichs has moved up to contend for the “Royal Flush Plumbing Rookie of the Year” in Modifieds.

 

          Saturday’s racing program features action on the ¼ mile track for Lacey Plumbing Outlaw Super Pros, Rock Solid Chassis Modifieds, Tri-County Car Company Hawkeye Hornets, Automotive Fuel System Stock Cars, Strauss Embroidery Women On Wheels, and Barron Motor Supply Cruisers.

 

          Ticket prices for both the Friday and Saturday programs are unchanged from last year. Friday admission is $10 for adults, $7 for Senior Citizens and Students, and Free for Children 11 and under. Saturday admission is $7 for adults, $5 for Senior Citizens and Students, and Free for Children 11 and under.
